bullet debat
i have a friend at work of whom we spent the better part of our graveyard shift arguing about bullet wieghts. my take on the subject is the heavier the bullet the more acurate the round in windy conditions or because the bullet is able to maintain its course.his outlook is the lighter the bullet the more it is able to burn through the wind.now i am no bullet expert nor is he were just two buddies trying to solve a debate. and i know there are lot of you in here that are experts so alittle accurate knoweledge would be helpful thanks.

Accuracy is affected by so many factors that you have to start by saying, "all other things being equal..." Heavier bullets are less affected by wind than ligher bullets, but individual rifles shoot better with some cartridges than others, and a given rifle may be more accurate with ligher bullets "all other things being equal." Sometimes you finish that way too.

I don't know ballistics as well as I should these days, but I do know my physics. As previously mentioned, "everything else being equal" and only looking at the bullet itself:
- a heavier bullet will travel straighter/farther
- an aerodymaic bullet will tumble less (eg, pointy-tip vs hollowpoint)
- a jacketed bullet should travel more true than a non-jacketed round due to surface friction
This is just from a physics pov only. People are free to correct me, but from where I stand, it boils down to weight, shape, and coating.

Please remember that the .223 from the M16A2 hits targets consistantly up to 600yards. This is not a very heavy bullet. My 2 cents [8D]

Leeblackman has it. The higher the BC the less it is affected by the wind.
In bullets of the same style and caliber (IE: 180gr (BC=.475) and 240gr (BC=.711) Matchkings) the heaver ones will normaly have a higher BC also. The style comes into play even more than the weight however, use a 220gr RN (BC=.310) and a 180gr spitzer boattail (BC=.501), the SBT will be less affected by wind than the RN even though the RN weighs more.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
The .223 in th '16 WILL hit a target - if the target is big enough - at 600 meters. There are varying opinions as to whether it will hit one at longer ranges - say... 601 meters. 0 -
How much does Balistic coe. affect velocity? I mean I know the higher the coe. the higher the velocity and the more accurate as well but I have wonderd if there is a formula that will dictate velocity from the bullets Coe. All things being equal of course. So lets say a 140Gr at .375 and a 140Gr at .575 ( just an example not real bullets). I have also wonderd exactly the effect of the twist ratio in the barrel on Velocity and Accuracy. I know Roy Weatherby experimented greatly with this do to having a hard time stabilizing the 100 Gr. bullet in the .257. 0 -
You know its very common for people to always look for the best overall for everything. And its also common for people to look for the biggest, fastest, farthest. The problem is they are not always the same in one, hence the case with bullets. My advice is to tell you friend just this. A little knowledge is a bad thing. 0 -

The BC dosn't affect muzzle velocity (your example would have roughly the same MV and energy), however the higher BC bullet would have a higher retained velocity (and energy) downrange. For practicle purposes, say under 250yd, the difference will be slight, over 500yd however it starts to become significant.
A given bullet needs to be spun at (or above) a certan RPM, this comes from both the MV and the twist rate. Lower the velocity and the twist rate needs to go up (say from a 1-12 to a 1-9), conversly increasing the velocity allows you to go with a slower twist. This is all fine and dandy if your building the rifle around 1 specific bullet and load, but anything else probably won't work as well. The twist rate of most rifles is specified to work well with a wide range of bullet weights and loads, but only range time will decide which combination works best in that individual rifle (and each rifle is different)
BC is simple a number that is used to compair different bullet designs, and in and of itself does NOT control the accuracy of the rifle. I've seen rifles that shot 1 hole groups with 220RN bullets, yet shot "pattern" with "high BC" loads. (guess which ones he took hunting? Yep, the 220 Round Nosers, because thats what his rifle liked)
