You will have to put your pre-ban upper on a pre-ban lower.
It would be illegal to put it on a post-ban lower.
The lower does not have to be a Colt, it just has to be a pre-ban.

Any AR-15 bolt will work, but make sure it is headspaced correctly.

As far as the pins go, if you can find a pre-ban lower that has the large front pin, that would work fine. It would probably be a Colt, as I believe they were the only company to use the large front pin. If not, there is an adapter pin that is used to match up large with small holes. These pins are available from most of the AR-15 parts supliers.

I believe the rear pins on all AR type rifles are the same size so whatever pre-ban lower you decide on should fit.

I think you can use the upper on a post ban receiver if you grind the bayonet lug off and remove the flashider and threads for the flashider. You can dremel the bayonet lug off pretty easily, and the flashider just unscrews, and then you can polish (grind) the threads off (or you could just cut off the threaded part of the barrel (as long as it is a 20" barrel). OR you could wait and see if the assault weapons ban sunsets
and then you can put it on any lower no problem.
