Long Distance, sniper style rifle, options??
I need some suggestions and guidance...please?!
Recently I have been getting the bug to add a sniper-style rifle to my collection of mostly assult-type weapons (AK47,SKS,ect.) I have a Target 10/22 but i want somethign with a little more KICK, and something that will reach the 300-400 yard mark with very good accuracy...
I am wondering if i would be better off going with Savage or Remington. I have looked at the Savage Police Sniper and the Remington 700 PSS. Which would be better?
Also keep in mind that this would be a long project. I cannot afford to go out and spend 1000 bucks for a rifle that is already set up. I would like to buy the rifle (no scope,stock,ect.) and add all my choices later.
I would like to keep the spending down to roughly 500-600 bucks for just the rifle.
Should i go with savage? or remington? or maybe something i haven't thought of yet?

The Remmington and Savage heavy barrel rifles are both good choices
I've had experience with both and favor the Remington slightly. The composite stock is the way to go. Buy the best optics and mounts you can afford and have them set up properly ( you'll want something in a 3-9 scope 50 to 60 mm objective). a Harris Bi-pod for the front end is a good option also. As far as caliber, my personal opinion would be a .308 ( the .223 isn't bad but doesn't have the power and would be my second choice). The availability of surplus 308 (7.62 nato) and .223
(5.56mm) make use and practicing easy and reasonably priced. For serious work the military match, special ball and comercial 168 gr match ammo can't be beat except by handloading. Even in the .223, most 62 gr mil spec ammo should be fairly accurate and there is a huge variety of "match loads being offered by all the major comercial manufacturers and reloaders such as black hills. Unfortunatly, even if you are piecing this project together a little at a time, you will end up in the $1000-1200 range to do it right.0 -
My suggestion to keep your money flow in good shape would be to "build" it. You will easily have $600-$650 in a uses PSS remington. The Savage can be had for less,..but the replacement of the factory stock with a good HS Precision or Mcmillan will put you close to the PSS which already has the HS Precision composite stock.
Buy a donor action,..in either savage or remington. Find a new takeoff heavy barrel on one of the websites,..and have a gunsmith adjust the headspace. The other option is an aftermarket stainless barrel,..but that will run ~$500 for installation, chambering, and crowning. Then buy a good stock,...and later on buy quality mounts/rings (badger ordinance, Nightforce, Leupold MK IV, Ken Farrel) and a quality scope with target turrets for quick change of zero. A Tactical Leupold, or a Burris signature series, as well as a Nikon Monarch should fit the bill for a first time tactical rig.
This should have you around your price range goal +/- $200-$300. The project will take you some time, and should allow the money flow to remain acceptable for you.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Savage 12BVSS in 223 or 308. Get the new one with the AccuTrigger.
I started out with a $220 110 and added a $60 used 223 sporter bbl and another $40 worth of bolt head and mag bits. Then I added Leupold mounts and a 24X Leupold used BR scope for $450. Then I added a $150 Savage laminated, ADJ cheekpiece stock. I worked the stock trigger down to 2.5 lbs. Then I added a SS 26" fluted, heavy bbl for $190 and sold the sporter bbl for $70.
What I really want is the single shot, solid bottom action.

I'd second Mag's suggestion of the 112BVSS in 308 or else get a Rem 700 in 6mm[;)]

The action on the remington is smooth as glass. Butfor the price. You cant go wrong with the savage 110 tactical. It has the 24 inch heavy bull barrel. I prefer the 308 for long range. But it is available in 223 as well. 0 -
Watch the auctions. Sometimes you come across good buys with buy it now. I like the Remington better, however I have not shot the Savage with the new trigger. That was my biggest problem with Savage before. I didn't like the trigger. 0 -

I think I'm just going to save up and get the remington PSS... I figure its a slightly better rifle and from the auctions i have been looking at it also seems to have a higher resale value.

Also the Remington 700 VSSF (Varmint Synthetic Stainless Fluted) is very accurate right out of the box ... sub-moa with factory ammo
