need help with smith and wesson

picked up a s&w 38 special revolver--local auction---has stamp "H" on frame-serial 400xxx---has some holster wear on barrell--what is the differnce between a k frame and j frame--any help would be appreciated---[:D][:D][:I][:I][:I][?][?]

  Steve.
  K-frame is the middle sized one that is the most common. It includes models 10,15,14,19 and others. Calibers run from
  22 to 357 and are usually 6 shot cap.
  J-frame is smaller; used mostly on pocket, short bbl revolvers like model 34, 36. Calibers run from 22 to 357. The 22's are generally 6 shot, while the center fires are 5 shot.
  The model #s I listed are only part list and do not include the stainless steel versions of those listed.
