any winchester 490 .22 shooters out there?

i found a like new 490 bbl and stock in my dads office today. nothing else. before i go dump some money putting it together, how do they stack up to a rugger 10/22 or another 490 equivilant on the market today? i just need it for jays and squirrels. nothing over the distance to the top of a tree. i saw the one on auction and its hovering around 200 dollars. it looks more like a colletors gun than a utility gun. i remember similar designed winchesters from that era had recall problems in 243 and 308. how was the 22? thanks!
