Can anyone here tell me about the .44spl?

Whats this round worth in terms of stopping ability?It doesnt seem to be as popular as alot of other self defense rounds and I dont know anything about it really.Is there another round it compares well with?I am currently looking at 2 different snub revolvers for carry one is a 5 shot .44spl and one is a 7 shot .357mag,now while I do like big bullets 2 extra shots is always good to have.I know about .357mag and its recoil and noise but I dont know jack about the .44spl.I dont ever see myself getting into anything that should last for more than what either gun holds.So are 5 .44spl's good enough to eclipse the 2 extra,just in case shots of .357mag or what.Any info on the round is appreciated especially in terms of its stopping capacity.Thanks.

  Not an expert on this one, but what you can do, and have the best of both worlds, is buy a .44 mag and load it for .44 spl.

  The 44sp is a great cartridge that is frequently "misunderstood". In a way it is to the 44 mag what the 38 sp is to the 357. As a matter of fact the 44 mag was developed by using high (probably excessive) power loads in the 44 sp.
  As an emergency carry gun, it is UNSURPASSED by anything. Ballistics are virtually identical to the 45 ACP, and noone doubts the 45's efficiency as a stopper. Although the 357 PAPER ballistics are superior to that of the 44 sp, at close range, there is not a doubt in my mind as to the superiority (as a stopper) of the 44 sp.
  My own favorite is an old model Charter Bulldog, at a bit over a pound in a revolver identical in size to the S&W M36 (38 sp), but firing a stopper like the 44.

  A great cartridge and my preference for personal protection. That .429 diameter bullet (semi wadcutters prefered) cuts a pretty mean path and you will never be at the disadvantage with a 44 special. Ask the "Son of Sam", he made it infamous!

  I believe it was Jeff Cooper who recommended 44 SPL wheelguns to law enforcement personnel who weren't willing to make the effort to learn a 1911. That's pretty high praise of the round's potential.
  
  As mentioned a 44 mag gun can shoot 44 SPL ammo. What I do is load 44 mag cases with less powder for extra practice use. Fun to shoot and easy on the hands.

  this is a real slow bullet , but is accurate as hell. It is comparable to the 45 acp and is a manstopper.

  I have a SW Backpacker that I load w/ 44 Spls. The one thing I don't like is the lack of decent self defense loads compared to some of the other calibers.

  The .44spl is a fantastic cartridge, especially for self defense. It'll drop an attacker flat.

  Academy in my neck of the woods has the gold dot hollowpoints. These are excellent self defense rounds.
