410 lever action question:
Does anyone have experience with either the Win or Marlin? I'm thinking of getting a 410 and leaning towards a double, but, don't want to rule out a lever gun. The local shops don't have any levers in stock and I didn't see any at last weekend's local gun show. Thanks in advance.

Personally, I would prefer a gun that would chamber 3" shells, rather than only handle 2 1/2" like those lever guns.

Thanks, I didn't realize that the Win was chambered for 2 1/2 only. Good point, but, not really that important to me, since it will just be a camp gun. And, I now realize that the Marlin hasn't been made in decades and would be pricey or scarce. Any comments, observations are appreciated. 0 -
Far easier to find 3" shells; many places that stock ammo will have 3" .410s, far fewer will have 2 1/2".
Personally, when I think of a camp gun, I think of an all-purpose gun, lightweight, compact, easy to pack. A combination gun like a Savage M24C would better fit that bill.

I have the Marlin 410. It is a great gun and beautifully put together. I prefer Marlin longguns over the Winchesters due to their quality control, pistol grip, wood texture, and side eject. If you can get one, then go for it. You will not be dissappointed, they are sweet!!!

Marlin started making their 410 again this year , as a matter of fact a local gun shop has one on hand , price is $425 i believe, phone number is 715-284-4621 if you want to call about it, 0 -
I see the Russians have come out with full length, steel cased 410 shells. In my service days the full length brass cased shotgun ammo stood up well under repeated loading and unloading of the pump action, riot shotguns we used for guard duty. 0 -
EITHER THE WINCHESTER OR THE MARLIN WILL DO A GREAT JOB. HAVE SHOT BOTH ON DOVES. A REAL HOOT.

The bright orange plastic front sight on the Winchester simply looks awful. It may be practical, but it looks awful. 0 -
Springfield's M-6, 22LR over 410 (3") is what I consider
a real "camp gun".
Folds up into a neat 18" package.
Stainless or blue.
And, at half the money of the Win. or Marlin.0 -
Thanks everyone. My 2003 Marlin catalog doesn't have the 410 in it, but, now I can see several on Gunbroker. I have a 39a that is about 5 yrs old or so and, yes, it is a quality rifle if a little heavy. I have 4 Win 22s, all are 50 yrs old and older and the overall quality and feel are far superior, in my opinion, to the newer Wins. Being partial to Wins lead me to put their 410 at the top of my list, but, after reading the comments here and seeing the Marlin on GB, I would like to see one. PA is a bit far since I'm in ME. There are 2 great local shops here; I'll chat with them and see what they can do for me. To the folks who suggested the combos; you're probably right about the overall utility value of these guns, just not for me. My camp gun comment was probably off, since I keep the red squirrel menace at bay with one of my 22s. I just have an urge for a 410 to shoot occasionally and like the idea of a lever gun. I gotta say all the advice has been useful and appreciated. 0
