22 smith & wesson long rimfire

does any one have any information on the .22 smith & wesson long rimfire cartridge. in several h&r catalogs (1909 and 1912) they list their premier small frame top break revolver as being chambered for this cartridge as well as the .22 short and long rimfire.

  I believe what you're refering to is the .22 Extra Long....It was introduced about 1880. it was in Ballard, Remington, Stevens, Wesson and late (1916) versions of the 1902 and 1904 Winchester Bolt Action SS rifles, and S&W revolvers......It was listed in ammunition catalogs as late as 1935, but has been obsolete since then. It used the same 40gr. outside lubed bullet as that later adapted to the .22 LR. The Case is Longer and held 6 Grains of Black Powder. It was originally a little more powerful than the Long Rifle...Not Noted for great accuracy. Smokeless powder loads had about the same velocity as the standard Long Rifle.....The only differance in the Extra long is that any of the .22's from .22CB, .22 Short, .22 Long, .22 Long Rifle can be fired in the .22 Extra Long Chamber.....

  thanks capt. has anybody ever seen a box of 22 rimfire cartridges labeled 22 s&w long.

  As far as I know, the only 22 rimfire cartridge that Smith & Wesson can lay claim to is the original 22 Short. It is unclear who actually developed the 22 Long, and 22 Extra Long cartridges, but it may have been S & W as well. The 22 Long Rifle belongs to Stevens.
  
  The problem with many of those old manufacturers catalogs, is that they often did not use the correct (proper) name of the cartridges chambered in their firearms. I have repeatedly run into this same problem while conducting research for my future book on the Winchester Model 1885. Winchester was terrible about putting their own "W.C.F." moniker on cartridges that were not their own. The did that with the 45-70 Gov't and the 25-20 Single Shot just to name a few.

  I have a couple of the old Winchester single shots that are chambered for the extra long. I have been watching to see if I could get a few cartridges to display with them, but I have never seen them offered on this auction or the other major auction. I have heard they are rather pricey.

  Any time I want to find out about or check availability on old weird cartridges I start with the "Old Western Scrounger" outfit or website. Try that as a resource for info. If it's obsolete they usually have it or can tell you about it.

  thanks for all the imput. so far i have found h&r catalogs very specific about the cartridges their revolvers will hamdle. for instants the 1912 catalogs lists the model 1906 double action in 22 short rimfire, 22 long rimfire and 22 s&w long rimfire. the smae catalog list the very small vest pocket model for 22 short rimfire and 22 long rimfire only.
