I have a guy trying to sell me a East German AK 47 is there such a gun I can't find any info on one and how much they go for Help me so I know if this gun is worth what he is asking...thanks[;)] 0 -
YES...The East Germans Made AK-47's...There were slight differances in some of the models...The East German 7.62 MPi KM {AKM}.
The East German 7.62mm MPi-K {AK-47). and the East German 7.62mm copy of the Soviat (SKS).....

There are (or were) East German (GDR) produced Kalashnikov Rifles. These are generally refered to as the MPi series of weapons and were produced at the old pre war Sauer factory in Suhl by VEB (Volksseigener Betrieb)-- also called the Ernset Thalmann Werk. During my travels through the old Eastern Bloc I've come across these GDR rifles now and then and typical early examples have wooden furiture while the later AKM types have very distinctive brown stippled plastic butt stocks, plastic pistol grips, and gas tube covers, although the forend remains wood on these rifles. There are various other sub types, one of which earned a NATO Foreign Material Number (FOM).
Here is your problem: None of these rifles should even exist in this country because they were never commercially imported. There may well be a few "bring backs" in private hands which were brought in by GI's prior to 1968 and registered during the ammnesty, but I have NEVER seen a GDR AK which was transferable. I would estimate a price of $15,000 to $20,000 for such a rifle if it did indeed exist. The Bush assault weapons ban from early 1989 went into effect before the Berlin Wall came down so there were never any pre ban GDR AK's imported into the United States. Due to the very hostile tarrifs and import regulations placed on communist nations back then these rifles would have not been allowed into the USA even without the ban.
I do recall about 10 years ago SARCO was claiming to be importing a small lot of GDR AK's which were post ban with thumbhole stocks, but these were actually supposed to have been built on FEG Hungarian receivers and used almost no German parts. There were all kinds of parts kits for GDR rifle imported over the years and I built a nice example for myself using a Hungarian AK as a host weapon for the German parts and it came out rather nicely. I'd like to learn a bit more about the rifle being offered up for sale to you; is this a real AK or a preban (or post ban) semi using East German parts. If it is a real machinegun than you are clearly out of luck unless it is registered. If it is a converted semi then it is worth the same as the current value of the host weapon on which the East German parts were installed.

Man, I've never seen a German AK anywhere stateside. Even East German Makarovs are rather few and far between. I'd be real careful on this one, sounds like this gun might be "flying below the radar"[;)]

I am willing to bet that this is a wild goose chase and that the rifle turns out to be something other than East German...possibly Hungarian. I just got off the phone with a couple of guys who are VERY SERIOUS collectors (read this as meaning RICH) of foreign machineguns and no one has ever seen or even heard of a transferable East German AK registered in ths country or even any pre 1986 sales samples (which dealers can keep when the go out of business). There are not supposed to be any East German semi automatic AK rifles in the US either so this rifle has to be something else...just what, we can only guess at right now.

Considering that the Berlin Wall didn't even come down until the end of 1989, I'd be surprised that a E. German AK would have been imported pre-'86. We weren't really on good business terms with the Soviet Bloc back then[;)]

okay I just meet with the guy again and have written down some info.It is not stamped german or anything but he says its a german gun I doubt it because it is stamped on the bottom Krinks Naples,FL M-97 762X39 on the side it is stamped Blue Ridge Precision Gun Works Fort Mill SC and I can not find anything on this either Help me I don't know anything about these guns and the value thanks for all the info so far... 0 -
