I'd just go cheap and then get what you want... A $60 Simmons will get ya by. Maybe later you can drop that scope on a .22 or something and then upgrade to a Leupold or something. The VX-1 Leupold scopes are a heckuva deal at $200...

As you get ready for an obviously expensive elk hunt, just remember: a rifle is no better than its sights. If this season you just happened to see that once in a lifetime 6x6 standing broadside 300 yards away, what scope would you then wish you had moved a little more hell and hard earth for?

Try the BSA Catseye model or their regular 3-9x40 scopes, I know alot of hunters who use them and I still haven't heard any gripes yet![8D]

That would be the Weaver V-9. It is a 3x9-38mm scope. A great combination of eye-relief, low-light ability and variable power. The 38mm lens is perfect for low mounting, and it has a standard Dual X Reticle.

jeez... i thought i already said "thanks" to you good guys in this thread(i musta replied to another post[?]...oh boy) anyhoo...i really 'preciate your thoughts and all were considered...prolly go with the simmons the gunshop has with free mounting/boresighting, though i wish i had time to mess around with some of your kind advice and offers. if i see the bull of a lifetime this hunt, i'd almost be sad to shoot it- i got a long way to go b4 i call it quits. besides, what 1000 lb. wapiti wants to get grilled thru a cheap scope anyhow? a 5 by and a few cows is another story altogether, well they're just waitin around for me to show up... 0
