Ballistics for 17HMR vs. 218 BEE in revolver
Hello Y'all,
I know some of you are students of all kinds of ballistics info regarding bullet weight, powder burn rate, length of barrel and resulting accuracy......but.....my question is this: If you were going to buy a revolver with a 10" or 12" barrel which ammo (of the two I've listed) do you think would be the best all around performer, the .17 HMR or the 218 BEE??
I know, it shows that I didn't do so well in chemistry class....

The 218 Bee by a LONG shot (and yes, I intended the pun). Ballistically, the 218 Bee is significantly superior to the 17 HMR... and it is reloadable! (making the cost of shooting it VASTLY superior to the 17 HMR). The optimum bullet weight of the 218 is 50 grains, and the 17 HMR is a tiny 17 grain bullet... the math is easy on this one.

It seems the rifle cartridge in a revolver concept has been tried before but until Taurus, they always had pro blems with the cartridges, espec. bottle necked, backing out and eventually locking up the cylinder. I don't know if that applies to the .218 Bee or not but you might want to look around and ask old timers. I know both Ruger and S & W gave up on it. Taurus seems to have mastered it in the Hornet, but I don't remember how it was done. I think it was in Shooting Times a couple years ago about the Raging Hornet to be the first successful use. GunHawke, You must have trouble in some other subjects also!!! I don't think this is as much a "chemistry problem" as it is a physics problem!!!! However that being said, the 218 should have a ballistic edge on the 17! HOWEVER!!!! I can find no data showing testing of the BEE in short barrels! I do have data using BC's and they make the two cartidges very close at the velocities that can be acheived with the short barrels.....I have no experience with short BEE's but get 2325 or better out of a 10" Striker in 17HMR!!! I like the 17HMR!!!! And I don't have to scrounge the ground to find the brass!!! GHD 0
