SKS Bayonet Lug Removel
Is there a way to remove the bayonet lug on an 40+ year old chinese SKS.The pin has been punched out. But I do not see any seams.I am willing to cut it off,if needed.Cleaned up it is a fine rifle a bit heavy. I prefer this rifle to be sporterize, it is an excellent working ranch rifle
Only stamped part is the mag.The barrel is stamped with all chinese symbols.where would the manufacter date be located.Any info will be appreciated Thanks

My Chicom SKS is a 1979 model. It looks like in order for mine to come off I would have to remove two pins. There is one solid pin in the actual bayonet lug part that is in a channel that goes through the bottom of the barrel. The other pin is a hollow "roll" pin that is in the sight base and going through the top part of the barrel. If you have both of these pins and have already removed them with no results, then I would think your sight/lug assembly is rusted on. This might be loosened with a liberal application of penetrating oil such as WD-40 or the like and alternating torque CW and CCW. Also a little heat works wonders also in moderation.
I have seen SKS's with this assembly removed and then scoped. They look quite interesting. Good luck! Oh, and about your manufacture date. There will be a number inside a shape or object usually on the left side of the receiver. (Mine is 0141 inside a rectangle.) This is believed to denote the specific factory the rifle was made in. I got this information off of an excellent site called www.simonov.net.

I don't know if it can be removed or not. I used a grinding wheel to cut mine off. Didn't take long & looks fine after I cold blued the bare metal. Add a five round magazine & the black plastic replacement stock & the sows ear..... still looks like a sows ear. 0 -
The site was helpful,I have learned that there is not many bringbacks from the VietNam.Having the NVM star stamped on the left side of the reciever Makes a big differance, also a milled trigger group.what really sent them off was the enlisted man paper work from the 33rd NVA
That was with this gun at that time.I have not givin this rifle or its aquasition too much thought for at least 30 years.Just like my father and uncles showing off thier sporterized rifles from WW2 I have it and use its no big deal too me,its just a sovenier, finally put to good use. Looks like I will have to cut off the lug, its made in 65

I would not remove it if I were you. It has to be cut or ground off. I did it to a Russian SKS so I could legally use detachable magazines and I wish I had never done it. You will probably regret cutting it off like I did.

HELLO!
Not very many bringbacks!
HELLO!
Sounds as though you may have a collectible that you want to make UNcollectible by (ruining) removing part of it.
You say you have the former owners' paperwork, there's not too many, it was made in '65, etc......
I've got a few SKS's; wanna trade straight up for one that has no lug?
If you know it all; you must have been listening.WEAR EAR PROTECTION!0 -
Gunnut is right, if the rifle is a Vietnam bring back you don't want to sporterie it. If you hve the paper work work it is worth eaven more. When ever there is documentation to go ith something collectable it only improves in value. DON'T MESS IT UP BY TRYING TO SPORTERIZE IT!! There are plenty of SKS rifles on the market that are fairly inexpensive to do this with.
It sounds to me like you have a rarity and you should keep it unadulterated.
If you ain't got a sense of humor you got no business bein here!0 -
