    I don't know where you can get the lighter loads, but if you haven't had a gunsmith go over your 45/70 yet, it's a good, safe idea to have it done. An older gun like you have may look fit to fire some rounds through, but unless it's taken apart and inspected, you could end up with some singed eyebrows or something worse. Trust me, I've seen it happen. I have a newer Marlin 45/70 lever action and I absolutely love it! Good luck and happy elephant hunting!

    The carbine was equally as strong as the rifle. They cut the load from 70 grains to 50 to lighten the recoil a little because the carbine is about 1/2 pound lighter.
    The factory (Remington,etc) loads are loaded for the trap doors.

    It'll just kick a little harder than the rifle.
