If you feed a K frame a diet of nothing but high power loads they tend wear out just a little sooner thus the L frame came along. In spite of S&W warnings, even alloy frame guns (12, 37, etc) will handle the +P for awhile. I shoot +P in my model 10 S&W no problem. I'm quite certain your model 64 will handle them.

My first duty weapon was a Model 64. Issued ammo was .38spl +P+. Every year we shot the duty ammo and replaced it with a fresh box. Never had a problem, however we always used wadcutters for practice.

how can i find prices on a colt 38 snub nose can you pont me in the right direction yhanx0 -
If you want to shoot +p or +p+ .38spl. get a .357 Magnum. It will shoot and handle any .38spl load you can find and not overly wear your gun.Look on the auctions here for prices on Colt .38's,they are pricey though,I like the later model Colt Cobra's.I think these are the best looking snub .38's.Its not a S&W or Colt and you didnt ask about it but I would like to suggest a gun that is high quality and perfect for an emergency.Take a look at a Taurus M617:2" ported barrel,7 shot .357 magnum, can be had black or stainless, can be had with concealed hammer for snag free pulling and DAO,will run you between $350.00-$375.00 with a lifetime warranty and every bit as good a concealed snubby as the S&W or Colt without the high price and you get 1-2 extra shots and it will handle any .38spl load you can put into it +p,+p+ or step up and still be able to shoot full power .357mag and the porting on the barrel will cut back the recoil on any round you choose to load.Good Luck. 0 -
Thx again for the replies!!
The reason i asked was Sports Authority was having a closeout on it.Regular price was like $10.89 or something but i bought several boxes at $5.88.
I do have a S+W mod 64 and a Marlin 38/357 rifle so it was a no lose situation!! Just wondered if it would be safe thru the 64
