AR15 problem need input
My brother bought a slightly used Colt Pre-Ban AR15 today, he got a Harris Bi-Pod, two 30rnd mags, one 20rnd mag, sniper/target grip, and a Bushnell Holosite for $800. After he got off work he brought it over so I could show him how to take it apart and clean it. When I went to push the rear receiver pin out to separate the upper from the lower receiver the pin was loose, real loose. I knew something was wrong so I went ahead and pushed it out. I told him it is supposed to be difficult to push out and that I never took one out completley just far enouph to allow the top to tilt. He said the guy he bought it from had a hard time getting it out. DING DING DING DING, I imediately knew the guy who he bought it from had messed it up. He must have pushed it so hard it broke off the little retainer pin that fits into the groove of the reciever pin. Have any of you guys ever seen this happen before? Is it easy to fix? Where would be a good place to get the parts to fix it??? Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like your brother's AR-15 has either a broken takedown pin detent or a bent takedown pin detent spring. It's an easy fix. What you need to do is disassemble it and find out what really broke. If it is any of the parts I mentioned, It won't cost him any more than $3.00 for both. Your brother still got a good deal either way.
If you don't already have a manual that teaches you how to disassemble it and shows a schematic parts diagram then pick one up.

OK - answer this question. Does this rifle have a retractable stock or not?

when you tilt the upper and remove the rear lock pin you can see the little hole where the lock pin retainer used to be, it is no longer there. I think the hole has a loose piece of metal in it but there is no spring pressure behind it to push it out.
Boomerang, it does not have a collapsable stock. I don't understand the significance of weather the stock is collapsable or not with reguard to the problem mentioned.

Remove the stock, install new retainer spring, reinstall stock, install accuwedge. close and lock receivers. Not hard at all.

That little bugger of a spring will fly right out of there and the person that put the retractable stock on will never even know it is missing. You are probably wondering how I know this? Been there done that. I think that the only thing wrong is that it is missing the detent spring.
Take off the stock and see if the detent pin is still in there, if it is then all you need is the detent spring. If they are both missing, then get both a detent spring and pin. This is a real easy fix, and a somewhat common occurrence to the novice AR enthusiast.

Ok, I now understand. Well, I have never taken the stock off of an AR, I guess they didn't think it was necessary for ordinary grunts to know how to tear one down that far so they never taught us that. Is it difficult? Does it require any special tools? What exactly is the procedure for taking the stock off? Oh ye, Thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it.

On the buttplate, remove the top screw. Slide the stock off, carefully! On the right side of the weapon, where the stock goes against the frame is the hole for the takedown detent, and spring. When you pull the stock off, this spring will come out. Check to see if the spring is missing, or the detent tip is broken off. When you put the stock back on, be carefull to line the spring up as you push the stock toward the frame (bent a spring one time). If you need a spring or detent, or both, let me know. I would be glad to send them to you.

If it is the normal AR15/M16 stock then you just remove the upper screw in the buttplate and slide the stock off. Have the rifle verticle when you slide the stock off and you should see the spring sticking up out of the lower receiver.
I hope he did not break the lower receiver by forcing the takedown pin all the way out. Also, the groove in the takedown pin should be closed on the left side.
The CAR stock takes a special spanner to remove and might be best left to a gunsmith familiar with AR's.

Ray, Thanks for the generous offer, I will check and see if he's ordered the parts yet and get back in touch. He definately needs both the pin and spring but when we looked at a parts website they had three different ones listed and different part numbers for each one. I was under the impression that they would be interchangable so that is a bit confusing. They had the pins and springs for $1.00 each but now Im not sure which ones he needs so Ill probably just have him order one of each.
