Rem. 742 Woodsmaster 6mm problem
I bought a used 742 woodsmaster about two years ago.
I have fired several rounds with the rifle and have a an ejection problem. I have cleaned the rifle and still have the same problem.
The cases usually get jammed. From what I can tell the bolt does not have a good enough grip on the case to eject it properly.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, if I need a new bolt where could I find one?
I also have another question. Is the 6mm caliber not quite as common in this particular caliber as for instance a 270 3006 or some of the other common cartridges?

Clean it , then wait two days and clean it again,pay special attention to the bolt and the chamber where the bolt kocks into it.Springs, springs shrink over time and loose their springy-ness, look at replacing the recoil spring, this should be done every few years anyway. when you get your new recoil spring hold it up next to your old one and note the difference in length. Also take apart your magazine and follower and clean them too.And pay special attention to the gas system as suggested before. this should remedy the problem, later problems that are common on these guns are that the receiver rails will wear out and cause multitudes of malfunctions.why do I seem to knw this? I have had three of them and had friends that have had them too. We have all since sold our troubles on to someone else, most buy extras for the parts, good luck with your gun and sorry if I sounded to negative....

Check that the synthetic dust cover on the bolt is not binding. This items gets rough with use causing bolt drag which can cause ejection problems. Brownells or Ren=mington direct should have any parts you need.
The 6mm was never as common as the 06 or 270 but is a very good round with the proper load.0 -
Thanks for the info. I too want to sell the rifle but figured if I could get i working I might get some more mpney for it. I am not a big fan of semi auto deer rifles. 0 -
I had a 742 in 30/06 with the same problem. It turned out the chamber had a lot of carbon buildup from burnt powder residue. Try using a bore brush in the chamber. It's kind of tricky since you can't get into it like a bolt action. A 30/06 brush like an army surplus number should work, better yet a 308 brush. They are the same diamenter as a 6mm. And rig up some sort of flexible shaft to turn it through the ejection port. Then wipe it out well with a cleaning patch and rod. Then you'll have a very reliable gun.
