Garand Question
I recently aquired a CMP H&R Garand, and had the good fortune to get one with almost all HRA parts. The only non HRA part I find is an SA op rod. Drawing number on op rod is 6535382 SA. My first thought was to find an HRA op rod to make everything match, but then someone on another website mentioned that some of the early H&R's were issued with SA op rods. Any input and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I bought a CMP Garand about 15 years ago and was wondering if anyone could provide me with some info and maybe a value for it. I have seldom shot it, but admire and respect its history. It has a Winchester Receiver with a serial number of 1276XXX Thanks. 0 -
There is evidence and most advanced collectors agree that certain early H&R M1 rifles used SA operating rods. All of these fall into a specific serial number range and since you failed to mention your rifles serial number-- other than it is "early"-- there is no way to determine what may or may not be correct in your own case. I should point out right now that ALL H&R M1 rifles with SA op rods are believed to have used used WWII era op rods with the relief cut-- no other SA types have been observed on H&R's . Your op rod is what collectors call a Type 10 and was used exclusivly by SA for new production M1 rifles after post WWII production resumed. Inter war rebuilds needing new op rods were provided with SA D35382SA marked rods (Type 9). Neither would not have been used by H&R as an OEM part on any of their production. You may wish to get another opinion, but I think that I know my way around the M1 serivce rifle pretty well. All H&R op rods were Type 10 variations and were marked 6535382 HRA.

5.6 million is actually quite a late H&R and is well into the second contract. You should have an H&R op rod without any doubt. As I mentioned all H&R op rods are of the same type and are marked exactly the same so any H&R example will work fine on your rifle. You got a nice break if your rack or service grade CMP M1 is all correct except for that op rod. Collector Grade H&R's runs around $1,100 and have a long back order period.

It is a service grade,good muzzel, TE of about 2.5. The stock doesn't have any markings other than a proof stamp under the grip. Stock is not "fat" as I have heard some HRA stocks are. I hand picked it, with help from a friend who knows his stuff better than I, while at Camp Perry for the JCG match. Picked through about 15 or so to get it. I am very pleased with it. Haven't shoot it for accuracy yet, but have put a couple of clips through it for function, and it performed well. Thanks for your help! God Bless, Bob 0
