2 GRAINS MAKE A BIG DIFFERANCE!

Loaded up 2 boxes of '06, 1 with 165 gr bullet and 54 gr of H-414, the other with 165 gr bullet and 56 gr of H-414. Went to the range today, and sighted in with the 54 grn loads first, then tried 3 of the 56 grn loads. The 56 grn load went 6 " higher, than the 54 grn load, all other componets were exactly the same. Is this normally what happens in your rifles??

  It sounds about right, but you also have to factor in the fact that as your barrel heats up from repeated firings the shot groups tend to do a little walking. Try your second rounds from a cold barrel and then see what happens.

  Consistency is important to accurate shooting, and 2 grains, which is nearly a 4% increase in powder, is a noticible change. So yes, that could make a difference in where the bullet strikes.
  
  The bigger question: did you notice a change in group size?
  
  I always had good success with IMR 4831 and IMR 4350 powders in my 30-06. If you don't get the groups you are looking for with H-414, you might want to give them a try.

  Two "more" grains of H-4227 in a K-Hornet will shred the bolt in a Savage 340, as well as laying the magazine clip on the bench, "like a banana pell. Been there, done that. Two grains does make a difference. GW.

  True enough. I have shot a lot of surplus ammo including some Turk Mauser 8mm. I noticed all shots were right on for windage, but were strung out over a foot vertically. Pulling some I found powder charges varied by up to 5 gr. so yes, it does matter, particularly at long range.
