Winchester 1873 pump shot gun
Looking for information on a Model 1873 Winchester pump shotgun, don't know the gauge. Approx value of this type of gun ect. I did not see any on gunbroker, just rifles. Thanks in advance

Winchesters "first" pump shotgun was the Md 1893, which is very simalar to the Md 1897 or 97. They made 2 Lever action shotguns, the Md 1887, which became the Md 1901. Are you sure the gun in question says "1873"? Regards Dave 0 -

Well, I got the information on the gun from a women here at the office; and you know how good third hand info usually is, and the gun belong to her late father. I have not seen it yet. At first she told me it was a Model 1837, was there such an animal? 0 -
No... as previously stated, it should be a Model 1893 or 1897.

does it have an exposed hammer? let us know when you see it. spencer take overs had an internal hammer. 0 -
Tajjn, sounds like she was close on the first try, it's probably a Md 1897, which became the Md 97 shortly after WWI. If it's a 16 ga, it has a short chamber, 2 and 9/16s, if it's a first or second year gun in 12ga, it most likely has a short chamber too, 2 and 5/8s. If you do get to see it, be carefull if you cycle it, the breech bolt comes back over the hammer and you can bust a knuckle if you grip the wrist to far forward. Value depends on the condition. This could be the "takedown" or "solid frame" 1897. Early guns with short chambers aren't as desireable as the longer chamber, (2 3/4s) Most guns in that age range run 50-70% or less, a value would be somewhere between $300-$500. If it has a short barrel, 26 or 28 in in 12 ga. with a Mod. or Cyl choke, a little more. If it's a 16 ga. with a 30 in barrel a little more. Much more info is needed to pin a value on it. Again a 97 this age, look at the butt stock, just behind the hammer, the wrist area has a tendancy to crack, so with a cracked stock, it would be worth less.
