Remington 742

I was wondering if any one had any pics of the damage cause by the bolt in the reciever of the 742. As a reference of what to look for.

  My wife has a Remington 742 that is backing out primers. It has sentimental value to her.I've had several gunsmiths tell me they can't get parts or don't want to look at it. Don't know if it was bought new or not. We have only put a couple of hundred rounds through it. Last gunsmith did at least take it apart and clean it better than I did. Trotline weight? Wall hanger? Give it to one of the local gangs so it will blow up in their face?

  Unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing, don't try to break it down. Unfortunately, most 'smiths aren't much help either. Through persistence & patience, I manage to keep my 150th Anniversary Model 742 in top shooting condition by cleaning what I can get to, on a real regular basis... and yes, I know it isn't a single-shot!

  THIS IS WHAT GUNSMITHS ARE PAID FOR. FOR A GOOD CLEANING IT'S NESSESARY TO REMOVE THE BARREL.

  IF YOUR PROBLEM IS WITH EXTRACTING THE FIRED CASE, CHANCES ARE IT'S A DIRTY CHAMBER .THE 742 IS FAMOUS FOR RUSTY/DUSTY TIGHT CHAMBERS . TRY CLEANING IT WITH CHAMBER BRUSH . IF YOUR DEAD SET ON CLEANING IT YOURSELF CONSIDER SOME GUN SCRUBBER OR POWDER BLAST ON TRIGGER ASS. THEN YOUR FAVORITE GUN OIL , BEFORE YOU DISASSEMBLE YOUR RIFLE,YOU SHOULD

  Go easy on using gun oil unless it's a teflon base like tri-flo,break free or other similiar, especially if it will be cold where you are shooting. Dad had a lot of jambs one year in cold weather. Gun oil apparently slows things down enough to cause some jambs. We hosed it down with tri-flo(it's been 20 years ago, there's better stuff like Break Free now) and the jambing stopped. I had the same thing happen with a Berretta 390 shotgun. I was told by the Berretta factory to use Break Free or similar in cold climate. Doesn't miss a shot now.

  In my area,most gunshops won't even take a 742 in trade.The problem is the rails in the receiver.Once they get a little chewed up from wear,you have a jammer.At one time,Remington would replace the receiver at no charge.They have long since run out of replacement receivers.If you have a good one,they are a nice rifle,If you have a bad one,sharpen the end of the barrel.You should now have a nice ice chisel.

  Old single shots has a point. However, a local shop has taken on the task of converting old 742's to a pump action. Unfortunately, if I recall, you're better off trying to find a better gun by the time it's paid for.
