My hunting buddy's father-in-law has used one exclusively for 10 years now. He's never left one wounded but he only takes shots he's absolutely sure he can get (under 75 yards)
Check out this link, very good reading on it.

Having a predictable enemy is better than having an ally you can't trust.

    Haven't hunted w/my SKS yet,(just got it)
but I plan on using it this season.Been using
an old refrigerator, stacked full of lumber for a
    back stop.Most shots go clear through.Put a 3/16"
steel plate behind it to deflect them to the ground,
but many still go through the plate! These shots are from
    150-170 yards.I think it will put down a deer.[^]

IT'S WHAT PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THEMSELVES THAT MAKES THEM AFRAID.

It has the same balistics as the 30-30. This round makes for a very good deer cartridge.

Use a good soft point bullet and limit the range to 100 yards or less.

I have taken 3 Missouri whitetails with my SKS. All shots were under 100yds with Winchester 123gr PSP factory ammo. I personally would not attempt a shot beyond 100yds, largely because I only have the open sights on it. It also made quick work of a SE Iowa coyote at @90 yards one day out of the cab of a 1086 International!

Bad News: The 7.62X39 has been used around the the world to kill men.

Good News: Anything that will kill a man will kill a deer! In all states hunters must use soft point ammo. The 39 is about = to the 30/30. Good Luck.

BOBBYWINS: I assume your shooting the Frig with some of the old imported surplus steel core military ammo . The soft point hunting ammo required for deer hunting won't do that.
For the safety of all the other hunters in the woods PLEASE don't use that ammo deer hunting.

Wolf makes a 154gr SP round for hunting that is supposed to be good and it's pretty cheap too. Be careful in using the US made ammo in the SKS, the rifle is very prone to slamfiring with soft-primered ammo.
