Drilling What is it?

I have a Savage *combo* gun (in 20 gauge and .222) as listed in the blue book that my tells me it is a Drilling. I thought true drillings were side by side shotguns. cam you Help?

"Drilling" - Refers to German for three. Thus, three barrels. Side-by-side with a rifle underneath.

As before mentioned - a Drilling is two shotgun-barrels and one rifle barrel combined in one weapon.

This type of gun is called a Drilling, not only if the rifle barrel is sitting beneath the two Side-by-Side-shotgun barrels - but also if it sits on top of them.
Confusing ?? nah, not really.

There is however a few different "Drillings".

There is also a "Doppelb?chs-Drilling" or "Boch-Drilling" which is one shotgun barrel and TWO riflebarrels - with two barrels in Side-by-side formation and one barrel on top or beneath the first two.
The shotgun barrel is usually one of the barrels in the Side-by-side formation.

There is a "Kugel-Drilling", which is three rifle barrels - also usually in a Side-by-side formation with one more barrel on top or beneath the first two mentioned.

=o)
To keep matters in the same category, it is also fun to look at "Combi"-weapons - which is combined shotgun/rifle barrels in either Side-by-side or Over-Under formations.

To take the Over-Under formations first..
If you have two rifle-barrels in an Over-Under formation, you have an "Bochdoppelb?che".

If you have a shotgun barrel on top of a rifle barrel - you have a "Bockb?chsflinte".

It is also a "Bochb?chsflinte" - if you have a rifle-barrel on top of a shotgun barrel.

The Side-by-side formations are a little bit simpler..
Two rifle barrels side-by-side - "Doppelb?chse" (Double-rifle)

One shotgun barrel beside a rifle barrel - "B?chsflinte".

Oh - nearly forgot the regular Side-by-side or Over-Under shotguns.

Two barrels in Over-Under formation - Bochdoppelflinte.

Two shotgunbarrels in Side-by-side - Doppelb?chse.

I hope I got them all right - always been fun to live in Denmark, just north of Germany =o)

Don't do anything that I've allready done - That'd be just plain STOOOOOOPID.

thanks for the german lesson! im glad my grandmother doesnt read my gun posts! she would whip me! i think this all just inspired me make a 'general discussion' post. look for it!
