Winchester Model 12 Help
I saw a model 12, a 1954 gun , with an x after the serical number.
What is the significance?

I took my Model 12 to have the ejector repaired. The spring was broken. While they had it they cleaned it. When they put it back togather they put the take down pin in backwards. How do I turn it around? They also had tightened the screws real tight to hold it togather. I had to loosen them to get the gun tube to turn so I could take it down. Now I'm afraid that the screws will fall out. Also was $85.00 a fair price?

I assume you mean the magazine locking pin? Just Push it in the direction it will go, (Backwards from what you are use to) rotate it so you can see the spring, using a flat metal object, (I use a little flat nose screw driver) push on the spring and pull the pin. Hope this helps. To R & R a Md 12 Breech bolt it takes about 10 minutes total. Since the receiver is now apart, Bolt, Trigger assy. and the inside of the receiver, can be cleaned. Another 10 min. Hope fully they let it sit in cleaner for awhile. Repairing the ejector spring, that is just a little flat spring, the unit sits at the rear of the bolt when closed, that would be a 5 min job. If you mean an Extractor that is on each side of the bolt face, that's an easy 30-45 min. job. the springs cost about 1-2 bucks. Since they removed the Mag pin sounds like the broke it down completely and cleaned it, good idea, depending on how much you shoot it. Typical shop rates are $50 bucks an hour and up depending where you are. For a good cleaning, (even though you didn't ask for it) and the repair. Not bad, Hopefully they didn't put any else in backwards. Md 12's aren't cheap to work on. that cartridge stop can sometimes be a bear to lay just right upon reassemby. I don't think you were ripped off, the gunsmith had at least an hour into it, maybe 2hrs. Hope this helps. Regards Dave 0 -
Thanks OW got the pin turned around. I could tell Model 12 were not something they worked on everyday.

A md 12 is a very dependable gun. I got my first one almost 40 years ago. My grandfather bought it new, in 1945. it's probably had 20,000 rounds thru it from light target to light mags. It's still on the first barrel adjustment, and tight. the secret keeping it clean. Winchester built them to last a lifetime, I'm just not sure who's!! glad you where able to turn the pin around! I'm always interested when I hear someone who had to get one "fixed". your gun should be ready for another 10,000 rounds now! Good Shooting, Regards Dave 0 -
