M 1 carbine

A friend of mine has a m1 with the following marking we would like to know is this a military issue or a repoduction and who is it made by. it has U S Carbine M1 on the front of the receiver and Natl Ord on the back the serial #is 23791 stamped in front of the rear sight. Thanks Steve

  Steve, Your Natl Ord carbine is a commercial repro. That company did not make carbines for the military.
  
  A company named National Postal Meter did make carbines under contract with the military as did about 10 others.

  Thanks for the info. I did not know there was another company making repos. does any one know how good of a weapon it is . any really bad things with it?
