Kimberkid, need some H&K advice
Mark steered me your way. I am debating on getting a Special Weapons MP5 clone, the SW-5, semi of course. What is your opinion on this carbine? I would like to get the real thing but they are no where to be found reasonably. Are the SW-5 worth the money? Is there an alternative to the SW-5?

I have an early cast stainless SW5 that has been excellent ... the only mags that it wont feed reliabily are the 40 rnd Asian contract mags. Besides SW there is a couple builders that can assemble and finish one for you ... I think all parts originally come from Special Weapons for the HK-94/SW5 builds.
Murray Urbach, he's in Garland Texas ... first rate work but old fashion, no website, only answers the phone until 10 am so he can be kinda hard to get in touch with ... he's the most established and most expensive ... and the only one that has done anything for me. Typically only interested in working on "real" HK's but will begrudgingly work on an FMP if its not too cobbled up.
jayson@investmentgradefirearms.com - www.investmentgradefirearms.com works mostly on SW and FMP based HK clones ... will but doesn't like to work on Century and PTR receivers ... he also builds AK's and FAL's ... he's one that everyone that I've heard of has been really pleased with his work and there is a couple others, less noteable I can't think of right off

Thanks Kimber - I take it that your first choice would not be an assembled SW5 since your are recommending others to build one from kits. Did I get that right? BTW, what were all those acronyms you were using? I am not familar with all of them (PTR,FMP,MK5).

The PTR-91 stands for "Precision Target Rifle" by J.L.D. Enterprises, Inc. a new company that is producing a heavy Barrel HK-91 clone and they also sell their receivers, which I believe is an imported flat and US made trunion ... the cocking tube is not installed ... info can be found here: http://www.jldenter.com/PTR-91 Rifle.html or contact is Recon Ordnance Company - (920) 922-1515
The FMP (Fabrica Militar de Braco de Prata) is a receiver made in Portugal, made under license of HK, on HK equipment ... said to be the closest receiver to actual HK, these came with the cocking tube and trunion already installed, there are a few of these floating around but unfortunately the completed imported receivers are now banned ... SW and a couple other companies are building FMP's from imported flats, except for SW, IMHO they may not be any better than one of the sloppy US made receivers (such as Century or Hess), as there is no assurance the trunion is square, cocking tube straight or installed at the correct depth to allow the camming action which unlocks the breach ... common "trademarks" of Century and Hess.
MK5 - my bad ... should be SW5 and how it came out MK I have no idea [:o)]
I only brought up the other builders as an option ... Murray Urbach helped me a couple years ago when I built my fluted SS heavy barrel 91 clone and was having problems with the headspace. Unless having a builder assemble it is cheaper I WOULD go with a SW built gun ... as I said I still have an SW5 and it runs perfectly. I've also had an SW3 (HK-91 clone) and it ran perfectly as well. I currently have an SW32 on order from Special Weapons ... it shoots the 7.62X39, uses AK mags of which I already have ten 20 rounders which will give it a more traditional look (in my eyes the long banana shape or the AK mag looks a bit odd), then if the AWB does set, I'll be putting a retractable stock on it! [:D]
