Norinco SKS D or M model info

Ok folks, what really sets a Norinco D or M model apart from a regular SKS in regards to markings?

Hypothetically if you had a low serial number SKS and converted it to take AK mags it would be a D or M model Norinco?

  The "converting" of a SKS to take AK mags isn't something done easily. The D or M models were made at the factory to take the AK mag and have a completely different receiver. The rifle doesn't have a bolt catch to hold the action open on the last shot and the triggergroup has the AK "toggle" mag catch instead of the regular SKS latch. They are also marked "SKS-M" on the receiver as well If you are considering converting one, I would recommend sending it to someone like Kreb's to do it right, The mag well widths between the two rifles is substantially different and it isn't simply a matter of machining a little metal off the receiver. Or just buy a D/M model, they are available, usually in the 250-400 dollar range.
