v35, I haven't got to shoot the light barreled ones myself but have a few friends who have them and they are tickled with them. The one I had was the heavy barreled stainless synthetic. Although heavybarreled it was considerably lighter than the Marlin VS due to the synthetic vs laminated stock. I did not think it was to heavy to be a hindrance when walking and stalking. Also the heavy barrels(and I beleive this is true with whatever gun you are using) lend themselves to being held better and more steady for shooting. I beleive I would go with the HB synthetic again if I was getting another one! GHD

GHD thanks for your reply. You speak of the Savage in the past tense. Have you given up on the 17HMR or did you buy a better rifle?

I have a Savage 93 in stainless HB w/ synthetic stock but in 22Win. Mag. I LOVE it! It keeps groups under 3/4 moa at 100yds w/ CCI Gold Dot. I really like the fact that scope bases are mounted to the receiver(included from the factory) so you get a solid base to mount agood quality scope. I have a Burris on mine and the combination is deadly to ground hogs/squirrels/fox.

I haven't gotten a goog shot at a coyote yet. Probably need to be closer for a clean kill...but I'll let you know when it happens![:p]

Today was the day to buy a Savage 17 HRM so I went to Walmart and found there are six different versions. Is the heavy barrel more accurate and worth the weight?
Has anyone evaluated the different versions?
I need some user input to help me decide.

    sorry messed this one up.

I have the heavy barrel with wood stock, had the trigger worked down to 3 pounds. shoots great groups at 100 yds. the cci hp work the best on prairie dogs up to 125 to 150 yards. both cci and the vmax seem to shoot the same.[:)]

I have the combo package with the blued bull barrel and composite stock. Mine shoots great and we have sold several at the shop. The only thing I wished I had done different was to get the SS model in bull barrel rather than the blue.

v35, NO I HAVE NOT GIVEN UP ON THE 17!!! It's just that I have this genetic affliction that makes me addicted to guns and so I have to buy and shoot and work on as many as I can!!!! My first 17 was the first 17 to arrive here locally, 17VS and I had told the owner that I would take the first one that came in!!! GOT IT!!! 7th shot down the bore killed a mature groundhog at 115 yards and I was hooked!! Then had to try to aquire, clean, shoot as many different ones as possible and report on GB and AR the results! Aquired the Savage and mounted a 3x9 Simmons on it(not equal in quality to the gun) and the 11th-15th shots down the barrel did .606 @ 100 yards! Then got the Striker as a gift from my wife (wonders never cease) and it is an absolute blast to shoot! Then got the 597 from aglore and tested it! The Savage is now in possession of a friend and the Remington is in the possession of another friend!! Will probably get a CZ and try it also!! However, if I had to go get one tomorrow the Savage would rank right up at the top of the list to buy!!! Any of you "lefties" out there that want one, I have a friend that has 6 left handed Savage 93/17's with wood stock, heavy barreled for sale! Get ahold of me and I'll hook you up!!! The 17 is here to stay!!! Have never seen this kind of accuracy from gun to gun from any rimfire common production guns!!! For that matter there are a lot of centerfires that can't equal it for accuracy!!!! GHD PS: Sermon's done! I'll get out of the pulpit now!!! Unless someone has a 25-06 question!!!GHD
