SKS question

I don't know anything about an SKS.

How do you convert a fixed mag to a detachable 30rd mag or don't you?

I'm thinking about buying an SKS to keep in the trunk of my car because they are so cheap and I already have a couple thousand rounds of 7.62x39 ammo.

  I just got a M type sks the one that is factory modified to accept AK mags, Thought it would be fun to plink around with, My question is that the mags really are hard to fit into weapon is this normal? And if I took a file to widen catch a little do you think it would harm anything? Thanks

  Most everyone I've talked to has had trouble with 30 rounders feeding ... myself included.
  
  As to your question: pull the bolt back and lock in the open position, turn up-side down, locate detent button at the back of the trigger mech. and depress ... trigger mech will pop up. The 10 round fixed mag is locked in place by it so you have to remove the trigger mech. to remove the mag ... then just re-install the trigger mech. without the mag ... note you will have to have the bolt locked back to do a mag change as the bolt slides through the feed lips of the mag.

  The best HiCap in an SKS is a fixed 20 round or stripper clips for the standard fixed 10 round. You can reload a fixed 10 round faster with strippers than you can clear jams in a detachable 30.

  just remember you can only use detachable magazines with russian , yugoslavian or albanian or preban chinese rifles if you plan on leaving a bayonet on it dont mean to get technical just trying to save some legal hassles for post chinese you must remove the bayonet lugs and install a sportster stock

  I've owned many SKS's over the years and I still think that they are the best deal for a semi- automatic military rifle out there. Good instructions from the guys up above on how to remove and install. Now, heres my tip: when you go to buy a hi-capacity mag for it, check out your local gunshow and buy a USA brand magazine for it. You'll be able to tell that its a USA because if it's new, it will be in a plastic bag with USA on it. These work great! Avoid any cheap copies and really stay away from the plastic ones. If our gun is in good working order, cleaned and oiled, it should work fine with the USA! Good luck!

  I've never had any luck with those Detachable USA mags. I gave 6 of mine to KingJoey who got them working. I have had the best luck with this mag that I bought at a gunshow for a steal at $10.

  You are tactically better off with the factory fixed mag and a chest bandolier loaded with stripper clips,aside from the jamming which is very serious if it happens at the "wrong"time after the 30 rounder is empty it takes time to reload in the field, time that you may not have.

  I've never had a jam with my detachable 30 rounder, but they are harder than heck to load, the spring is so tight. Plus the long 30 round mag can make certain shooting situations harder because the mag gets in the way.

  There are instructions on the net that tell you how to convert the rifle to accept AK mags but that would violate the 'Assault WEapon' manufacture and import ban...big no no.
