can they be shipped direct to the buyer or do they have to go to an FFL

  Generally, they can be shipped direct, at least according to Federal law. Some municipalities, counties, and states treat them as regular firearms. In short, depends upon destination.

  I get them direct. Some sellers want proof of age. Pre-1898 cartrige pistols, however, may be a problem if they chamber current available rounds. You may need to go through a dealer.

  There was a good discussion on this on the general discussion forum today. As some have pointed out if it is a muzzle loader, no BP cartridge guns, then it can be shipped direct depending on the local laws. KY will let you ship direct where as say NYC will not. Also as a dealer I cannot legally ship to CA as pertaining to Muzzleloaders. cbxjeff & p3skyking both are right and gave good advice in their answers so it depends as to where you live. I have shipped to PA, OH, TN, here in KY, and some other states that have not so strict laws. I do check the local laws that I am shipping to before I will commit to ship though. A good idea is to check your local laws and if you are the shipper, check the laws where you are shipping to.

  In addition, you must know the shipping rules of the carrier.

  As far as Federal law is concerned, it makes no difference what cartridge an antique firearm uses. An antique is an antique regardless and is not regulated. The restriction on using currently available cartridges only applies to reproductions of antique firearms, not the originals.
  
  However, as others have stated, state and local laws may vary. I know that there is no restriction against shipping antique firearms or reproductions not using currently availabe cartridges to California. The California firearms laws use the same definition of antique firearm and the Federal regulations and they are specifically excluded from the definition of a "firearm" under California law. See PC 12001(e).
