limit on firearms you can own ???
i have heard for years there is no limit on the amount of legal firearms you can own but the way things are with politics was wondering has this changed ??? because i read in the paper a man was jailed because he had 25 rifles and shot guns ....and they were no more than deer rifles just wondering need all input

I know of no such law in this country! Is there a limit on automobiles, boats, ANY comsumer product? You can own any amount of hypodermic needles, etc.
Mark, verify this if correct, I understand Kalifornia now has some type of law that you can only purchase a certain number of handguns per month. (Is there any court action on this????)

He may have been jailed and happened to have 25 rifles and shotguns, but there would have been more to the story. Perhaps many of them had been stolen or have an other nasty background. Only limit I have run into is multiple hand gun purchases in one day. That is in IN.

I recently moved away from commifornia and yes there is a law that you can only buy one gun per month. Here is how the million mom march describes the law: "California Action: In April 1999, following the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado, the California General Assembly unexpectedly passed a one-gun-a-month law for California, and the Senate approved it. Governor Gray Davis signed California's measure into law shortly thereafter. California became the fourth and largest state to curb gun trafficking through this common-sense measure." So far as I know the only limit to the number of guns you can own is the strength of your wallet and this is what holds most of us back! Here in California there is a one handgun a month purchase limit but this does not apply to private party handgun transfers and if you have a Curio and Relics FFL you are also exempted from the one the gun a month limit (even for non C&R handguns). The only thing I ever heard of that even came close to this sort of thing was a decade ago when the Clintonista's were running wild in DC with their new Brady Bill II and Brady III.
Their idea was to create a Federal Aresenal Permit which was going to be administered through the BATF (of course) and cost something like $50 per year for a five year permit ($250 up front-- ouch!). The way I understood it was that a permit would be needed if you wished to store 25 or more firearms in any location or keep 10,000 rounds or more of ammunition. Of course all this would have meant was that everyone would keep 9,999 rounds of ammo in their garage and have no more than 24 firearms in their house. I figured we'd have a LOT of 24 gun collections! Cooler head prevailed and a lot of these lunitics were voted out in Novemeber, 1994 and I've heard nothing about this since. This sort of idea may well return again some day so keep on your toes and never assume that we've heard the last from those folks; they are down right now, but they are still dangerous and we were all taking them very seriously during Clinton's first term!

If 25 were the limit I'd be screwed. I'm only 24 years old (!yup) and already have...mmm... last count closing on 70. Dunno how much ammo but well over 10,000 rnds. When you inherit money with the stipulation "enjoy it, don't pay bills with it" well... guns, a boat, nice car, and still have some money to play with for my Master's. Thank you, grandpa for your forsight of hanging onto those worthless stocks in the Depression.

Don't take this wrong Jonk but I'm AMAZED that you are only 24. You come across as much more mature! 70 guns is a great start and you are well ahead of me at that age. As I said, never forget that the enemies of firearms are still plotting and planning and a gun ownership limit of X-number of guns per person would certainally fit into their plans. We must be careful that they are never again given the kind of influence on a national level that they enjoyed during the Clinton Administration. Enjoy your inheritence and I know that your grand dad appreciates the fact that you are enjoying youself at a young age when the money REALLY matters. My own grandmother past away recently and although her estate is substatial, at this point in my life I really have no use for the money...at 24 it would have made a world of difference to me-- now I just miss Grammie.

Well there is a little story here. I shot my first milsurp at age 14 and thought it was fun but left it at that. Then I got to college and majored in history and I got a real interest in antique firearms in general, milsurps in particular as they are so comparatively cheap and a great buy, imho. So Grandpa passed on a few years ago and for about three years I bought a gun a month, bringing me up to my current number. I quickly realized that it is an addiction, and that you can never, ever have enough. More than you need, yes, but not as many as you want. Most are holed up at my parent's house as there just isn't room at my apartment. But anyhow, since I am an inquisitive (and thrifty) sort, I wanted to learn about the guns in question so I would know what I had and when I saw a good deal. So I learned an awful lot about old guns in a few years, a lot of it here and on other forums. And of course reloading came along as a logical step, as well as bayonet and general milsurp gear collecting.
I'm starting back for my master's at the end of this month, with a study abroad in Austria for 10 months. So no shooting for ten months! AAAGGGHH!
I generally do suprise people that I'm only 24. I even LOOK older, people generally take me for 30, esp. now that I'm getting a little white hair. All men in my family had full heads of white hair by 30 and it seems I'll be no exception, sigh.
Ah well, thanks for all your help guys. I feel I have a good start. I might even write a book a few years hence, probably on some more obscure milsurp guns that can take advantage of my knowledge of german language, so if so... well keep your eyes peeled for a book by Jonathan Klein![:D]
