help please mod 1873 38/40

I recently inhereted a winchester model 1873 in the 38/40 cal.
it has an octagon barrel, beautiful walnut(i believe) stock,
it is in very good condition..it does have a few indentations in the stock, very small ...can anyone give me a rough appraisal on this gun..any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you, royce richards

  Winchester made over 700,000 of the Model 1873 during a period of 46 years. Needless to say there were many different variations, some very valuable.
  It would be in your own best interest to get a hands-on appraisal from a KNOWLEDGABLE collector or dealer.

  Rufe-snow is right. Yours is a potentially quite valuable rifle and should be looked at by an expert.
  
  Value will be dependent on whether it's a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Model, Rifle, Carbine, or Musket, actual condition, caliber, case-colored or plain receiver, Special Model (1 of 100 or 1 of 1,000), etc.
  
  Generally speaking, and if your gun is actually in Very Good Condition:
  
  The .38-40 caliber was introduced in 1879....
  
  1st Model (Ser. # 1 to about 31,000)
  
  Rifle - $7,500
  Carbine - $14,000
  
  2nd Model (Ser. # 31,000 to about 90,000)
  
  Rifle - $7,500
  Carbine - $9,000
  
  3rd Model (Ser. # 90,000-up). Values same as 2nd Model.
  
  Be aware that serial #s did overlap between models.
  
  With a gun this valuable, you really should get an expert appraisal.

  this gun has an oct. barrel I think 26"..havent looked at it in a year..,thanks again
