.223 Ammo Question
Years ago I was buying .223 ammo supposedly canadian 62gr at the shows in lake county, and it had loaders and strippers made of plastic that could also be burned as a solid fuel. Does anyone know where to find this again. Thanks for the read..

We were told that the best round for this caliber is the SS109 ammo with the green teflon tip. Anyone know where you can get this ammo or what distributors carry it if any. We have never heard of it. Thanks... 0 -
This only applies to the fast twist barrels with a twist of "1in7" which stabalise the 63gr bullet better than the 55gr for the "1in9" twist.
The tip is not teflon coated, it is mearly green paint. to identitfy that it is the 63gr bullet with the steel penetrater core inside.
These rounds can be found at most gun shows where surplus ammo is for sale.
You can also find these pulled bullets at shows, as well to load your own.
I have seen them advertised in "cheaper than dirt" and other catalogs. You will have to look for them in these catalogs.
They are available, but a bit pricey.

Well it depends on what your going to do with it. For hunting and stuff, no, but for plinking around, sure. The SS109 is a light armor piercing round. Its not a "tank killer," its designed to penetrate basic infantry body armor and helmets. But it might not shoot very well in your barrel. If you have a 1 in 7 twist rate you should be ok. A 1 in 9 is ok. But anything higher and you might look into lighter bullets.
The SS109 doesn't have a plastic tip, its just painted.
Personally I prefer Black hills 68gr BTHP ammo. My AR seems to like it alot.
There are many different brands and bullets available for .223rem. Personally I'd only use military surplus ammo for plinking. There's alot better civilian ammo available depending on the task you intend on using it for.
If you plan on hunting with it, you may look into Winchester Supreme 64gr Power Point ammo, I've had some good experiences with it.0 -

Fine the 1-7 will shoot all available weights and will not "over stabilize" the lighter bullets. 0 -

If your looking for accurate factory ammo. My advise would be to go out and buy one box of everything you can afford to shoot, and see what your gun likes the best, then buy it in bulk. 0 -
