Black Powder Rifle

I am looking for information on a rifle I saw the other day. It was a breech loading Falling block black powder rifle. The shooter took a paper cartridge with the powder and bullet, inserted it in the breech, and when you closed the action, it cut off part of the paper cartridge to expose the charge.
Can you tell me what kind of rifle and what caliber operated in a like manner?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.[:D]

  I have a long rifle oxcation shape barrel Cal unknown the only
  marking I can fine is h Scott & sons what is it ???????

  Welcome to the Ask the Experts FORUM...The Gun You discribe could be one of several Pre Metallic cartridge guns...SHARPS is One....BURNSIDE was another...Is there anyway You can ascertain as to which One you want to know specifically about?.....

  Loading like this wasn't all that uncommon in the brief period of when breechloading rifles were used prior to metallic cartridges. Heck, even muzzleloaded cannon's used a similiar idea. They used a powder bag which they pierced before priming.
