whats the best long range bullet for a 30-06?

I have a 7mag that is my main rifle. I also have a backup 30-06 for the "gun rack"....I use Nosler Partitions in the 7m and am really happy with them. What is the best all around bullet for the 06 on a 300 yard shot. I live in open country and 300 is very possible if not expected. I want to be "almost" as confident with my 06 as my 7mm at 300 if the 30-06 is the gun I have that particular day, so what should I shoot through it?....I don't reload, but do always buy premium ammo. Any suggestions on what premium ammo I should start using.? I will also shoot close range with this gun too.....thanks

  As far as the projectile is concerned, in my opinion, the best bullet for .30 caliber is the 168 gr. boat tail hollow point. The Sierra Match King has always been my favorite. I use it in .308 and .30-06. I have purchased factory loads for the .308 but the .30-06's have always been hand loads. Maybe it's just me but every .30 cal. rifle I've ever owned has shot better with that bullet than any other. Don't know who sells it but I would imagine that any of the big manufacturers carry a version. If not, try Black Hills.

  The 165 to 168 grains always work best for my long-range '06 work. If you are hunting, make sure you use soft point bullets, Nosler Partition are best. The HPBT are usually target bullets, and do not expand properly for hunting big game. 300 Yards with an 'o6 is no problem, if you practice!!

  The swift scirocco is an excellent bullet (spendy too). They come in factory ammo for a 30-06 but as with any bullet you are probably better off handloading. It will fly faster, farther and retain more energy than almost any other bullet.

  Oh I forgot, the game I'm usually in persuit of is either Whitetails or Mule deer (bucks). I'm not concerned with "meat loss" as I apply for extra doe tags as far as meat is concerned. There is no such thing as "too dead" when a big buck is on the line. Just thought I'd mention the purpose of that 300 yarder.....thanks again[8D]

  If you only shoot factory ammo, you owe it to yourself to try out the Hornady Light Magnum loads with either the 165 gr or 180 gr bullet. I do reload, yet find the Hornady's equal the best handload I can roll in my Win Mod 70 '06. Extreme accuracy and power loadings.

  a 165gr balistic tip,....in any offering. If you hand load,...load the 165 SST from hornady,..and I bet you'll not be disappointed. I beleive IMR4350 will be the powder to start with as well.
  
  For a factory load,...try the new remington 150gr accu-tip.

  One caveat has to do with the twist of the rifling in your barrel. In my 30-06's, the twist favors 180 grain bullets over all the other bullet weights for accuracy.

  Most of the 30-06 rifles on the market come in a 1 in 10 twist. This is the standard for that caliber.
