Cocked and Locked?
How does this work?What on the pistol actually locks,the hammer?How effective is this as a safety?Thank You.

Hello, actually the 1911 has four safeties. Half cock, grip safety, thumb safety, and the "disconnect" safety (where if you apply pressure to the front of the slide, it won't fire). All of them are almost like "On/Off" switches. The best safety, a smart shooter.

if you are interested in a 1911 type weapon but don't like to carry cocked and locked take a look at Para ordnance LDA series pistols same 1911 features but has a very nice light double action trigger instead of cocked and locked 0 -

Depends on which pistol you're talking about. Generally the hammer is locked indirectly by blocking movement of the sear.
Some safeties disengage the disconnector from between the trigger and the sear.0 -
On series 70 Colts and older, it is THE safest way to carry with a round in the chamber. The best way to carry IF and I mean a big IF, you know what you are doing and are experienced with 1911s. In my Executive protection days( early 80's) that is all I carried. Now unless you are experienced I would strongly recomend that you not carry a 1911 in this way. The series 80 and up have a lock so that is not necessary. Usually now when I carry I use the Colt Defender or a 1991 commander so it is not an issue anymore. The only other gun I carry cocked and locked is my Coonan .357 auto. Hope this helps.[;)] 0 -
The problem with cocked and locked really is two-fold: a properly set up 1911 that is also carefully maintained by its owner AND a user that knows how to operate a 1911. This doesn't really require lots of experience--it requires a responsible individual with discipline. Many 1911 owners don't have the discipline to maintain their firearms so one can only guess about their discipline in operating the gun.
If you notice the ads for Para citing a nervous 1911 user whose gun safety was brushed off in carrying. Soooo what? The gun still cannot fire unless the gun is grasped and the trigger is pressed.
A firearm user who cannot manage a cocked and locked 1911 probably shouldn't own a gun at all-- much less use one because 99.9% of the discipline necessary would still be applicable to another type of gun. I know that's a harsh statement but any thoughtful gun owner knows that it is true.[:(]
