How do you re-align sights that have been removed?

A friend gave me his old barrel off a 10-22 Ruger, after he bought a target barrell. The old Ruger barrel has had both sights driven out the dovetails. How, and where do I start , to re-align the sites to original configuration. Also, the rear sight blade was loose. When I inguired as to why the blade was also loose, he said the gun had always shot about 10" high at 100 yards.

I know the barrel is not worth much, but the challenge to me, is getting everything in alignment, to try on one of my guns.

  I would just put them in the middle and fire for effect.

  Gunsmiths often have a kind of columnator that can be used for centering iron sights, gets you on the paper like a bore sighter for scopes.

  You might try bore sighting, looking through the barrel at a target whie the barrel is sitting firm, then bringing sights into the same alignment.

  I've never seen one that with the sights put back in the middle would not be on the paper, at say 50 ft.

  start with you front sight centered. put your gun in a rest and secure it. fire it. look at where the sights are aimed and adjust to the hole. move rear sight to the direction of the hole. hole right? go right. once you have the hole and sights aligned after numerous shots, worry about up and down. if the gun was that far off, it sounds like a bbl to receiver fit was off. if the receiver was bored off center, its not the bbl. you got a bad receiver. just ask any cheap M-1A or Garand owner what i mean and he'll understand totally!

  If it still shoots high after you've adjusted the rear sight all the way down, you just need a higher front sight blade. Most any gun shop can provide you with one. Shouldn't cost more than about 10 bucks.
