Dont know what to buy
I wanted to by a French Mas49/56 but have heard negative things about them. So I then thought about the Cetme and have since heard some negative things about also. I want a semi auto military rifle in a larger caliber, but I dont know what to buy. I dont want to spend an arm and a leg, but would cosider. Do you have more luck with the Cetme's than what I have heard?

The French gun is in my experience a great weapon, just DON"T get one that has been converted to .308, stay with the original 7.5 French and you'll be fine. Don't have a CETME but they are supposedly great guns. M1 Garand is about the best for the money though.

I agree with jont, Iv'e owned one that was the original 7.5 and one that was "converted" to .308. The 7.5 was a great shooter and fired without any problems. The "converted" one jammed and would only cycle a few rounds at a time. It seems like the main reason that alot of guys buy the .308 version, is because the ammo is much cheaper and more available. So, if your set on getting one, go with the original 7.5. As far as the buying a Cetme, it's like a crap shoot, you might get one the works good or one that don't. Another large caliber rifle I would suggest is a L1A1 or a FAL, both are .308 and are of a better quality than the Cetme. Both are more expensive, but "you get what you pay for" ( sometimes ). Although I'm not fully into rifles, I'd recommend an M1 too. Chances are good that you will be completely satisfied with it. If not, on the day you find out for certain what special gun really floats your boat, you'll have a standard of comparison that will serve you for the rest of your life; if you are foolish enough to part with it, M1s are always desirable too--not something you have to armtwist someone into buying.

I dont want an AK I have a sks that I bought back in 94-95. I am in the process of getting rid of it. Also the Fal and L1A1 are better guns? Has anyone heard of or know the price of a PRT 91? 0 -
PTR91 is an Updated US made copy of the Cetme's prodigy the G3 or HK91. They use a roller locking system and have no gas system to my knowledge. Go with the FAL, they are timeless like the Garand, but hold 20 rounds and ammo is cheaper than 223 mousegun ammo.
Check out Falfiles.com lots of info there. Generally the Century guns give poor performance from what I have seen, although they can be made to work well with some tuning.

Does it matter what Fal? Since I have noticed that their are several types. I believe Century even makes one. Where can I get one? What about the L1A1? Can they support scopes? Since I would like to use them hunting and for fun. Can you get 5rnd mags too? 0 -

Gotta agree with drobs. Dollar for dollar, you can't beat an AK. If you don't want one that's fine.
And guys, for the umpteenth time, these rifles are NOT chambered for .308 Winchester. They are chambered (or re-chambered) for 7.62NATO.
