thanks for your and everyone elses input on the romanian .22. since you mentioned that you refinished the stock, can you give me some tips ? i have been told that they come with a real heavy varnish on them, and, i have heard that oven cleaner is one of the best ways to get them down to clean wood. thanks much.

  vanh, I went through this a while ago with an ugly SKS stock. I almost went the oven cleaner method and was strongly advised against it by some experts. There is a recent response on this forum saying that no matter how much you rinse it you can never fully remove that stuff and in a few years time the acids it contain will ruin your stock and barrel. I follwed the advise of a trusted and respected 'smith and used acetone (from Home Depot) mixed with a little diatomaceous earth (I got mine from a feed store but garden centers and some hardware places sell it too) - I am sure I paid less that $10 for everything. Mix the two together and it forms a runny paste that dries within seconds when applied to the stock with a rag or brush. I heated my stock in the oven on a low setting for a while first and that really helps bring the oil to the surface then took it outside to apply the mixture.The acetone pulls out the oil and the drying earth collects it. Just brush it off after a few minutes -oil is captured in the powder. It will take several applications of this but can be done in one setting in an afternoon. I would avoid the temptation to rinse or submerge any wood on a firearm as it presents a real danger of warping. A damp cloth or one with a little wood soap is a better idea.   Great ideas. I found out some garage floor dries were made from diatomaceous earth, also. Brake cleaner also will dissolve oils really well, tho I have not tried it on stock material.

  Use "Aircraft Remover" in the gel form, it brushes on and lifts most finishes without damaging the wood. Use gloves when using and wash the stock down with mineral spirits afterwards to get off the residual.

  thanks for the ideas. i am sure i can find all the stuff that you guys suggested, in fact, since i have a pool, i even have diatomaceus earth. i dont have the gun yet, it was supposed to be delivered this week ( kind of like the checks in the mail ) but i will definately do before and afters. fyi anyone who buys the romanian .22, i picked up scope mounts for it at the latest gun show down here, i got them for $20 bucks, which saved me on shipping and delivery time. they look to be about 11 milimeter, just a little differant from our home grown stuff. thanks again, seee yaaah !
