AR-15 uppers and lowers

probably a dumb question but.....

I may purchase a bushmaster lower for $279...but i haven't decided on an upper yet.

will any ar-15 type upper fit it with excellent performance?
Rock River, olympic arms, armalite, ect.

  The only dumb question is: the one you didn't ask.
  
  MOST AR-type uppers will fit; you will likely have a problem with a Colt upper, since many of them use a different size bushing where the front screw connects the upper & lower. (You can buy an adaptor.)
  
  However, since you DID ask the question, you're going to get the Mixed Parts Mongrel lecture. The companies you named all make excellent AR's which come with warranties. Why would you want to put one together from parts? You won't save that much money. And, you will end up with a Mixed Parts Mongrel; the color of the parts won't match, you might have assembly & function problems (which you will have to pay someone to fix), & you will take a beating on resale. Buy a new rifle in the box, & you will avoid all these problems, plus have pride of ownership instead of something you will always have to make excuses for.

  Speaking as an owner of a mixed parts mongrel, they are not a problem if it is a good cheap shooter you want. I just bought an RRA upper and put it on a Colt lower. It works great and doesn't look all that bad either. Matter-of-fact, I am so pleased with the tight fit and finish of the RRA, I getting ready to buy another RRA upper and place it on a Bushy lower. As far as resale goes, if you want to sell it in the future, then sell them separately as you bought them.

  i have a colt pre ban sporter h-bar and just recently put a jt shorty upper on it and its much tigher than it was and finish is almost the same...functions perfect...tom

  I have an Oly AR plus four uppers from different manufacturers. They all fit well. I don't see any difference in color or surface texture. If you're considering it as a collectible or for future resale it might be advisable to buy upper and lower from the same maker.

  I ended up with an olympic arms lower and rock river upper, and it is a fantastic rifle. Dead accurate and dependable. Beat the heck out of the original bull barrel olympic arms upper it had on it.
  The quality of the upper is very important. The lower just needs a good trigger, I put a jewel on mine.
  Thats my opinion anyway.

  I just put a RRA upper on my Bushmaster lower , fit is better than when it had the 24" bushmaster upper on it , looks just fine and shoots great

  Just make sure you go with good vendors if you decide to build... I got an ASA upper and it was a POS (finish didn't match at all and never would feed/ function right). Replaced it with a JT upper and love it. I do agree that if you are going to pay $279 for a lower, you would be better off buying a complete rifle, BUT, you can get a stripped OLY, Eagle Arms (made by Armalite), or Rock River stripped lower for $100, add a JT kit for $450 (upper is assembled, and lower takes about an hour) for a total cost of $550, and good luck finding a complete AR for that price. Good experience putting the lower together too. Go to www.AR15.com for all the questions you have....
