savage 112/110

I am interested in getting into competitive shooting with a club near my hometown, but my Remington 7400 isn't good enough for long range shooting. I think the club shoots somewhere around 300 yard targets with .30 caliber guns. I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Savage models 110 and 112.
Which is more accurate? Would the .308 or the .300 Magnum be a better selection? I"d appreciate any honest information given to me.

  Go for the .308, Rich. The ammo is cheap and 300 yards ain't so far on a rifle range. Recoil will not be bad and the Savage rifles, although I don't have one , get a lot of good press on this forum.

  Have a 110 in .308 and like it a lot more than I thought I would. If you go that route, pop for a box of premium factory ammo with the 168 gr BTHP. If you like it, you can reload to the same specs but I think you'll find that that rifle/bullet combo is capable of terrific accuracy.

  Yep, I'd go with what the guys said- .308 Win. all the way. Ammo is much more inexpensive plus more to choose from.[8D]

  The 308 can be very accurate out to 300 yards and then some. You might also want to take a look at the Savage heavy-barrel models in 308, they also come with the Accutrigger. Very comfortable shooting rig to spend an afternoon at the range with.

  A friend suggested the Savage 10FP in .223 with the Accu-trigger (24 inch barrel). The first day I fired it I loved it so much I ordered the same thing in .308 on the way home from the range. I use to carry the M21, have fired just about every sniper and long distance rifle out there, and for the money the Savage 10FP/110 is about as good as it can get.
  
  The .308 round is going to be the most versatile. You will get good distance from it and you can reach out to 600-800 yard without problems. I added a Harris Bipod and an Accu-shot to it. With surplus Portugese military ammo I can get a 1 inch shot group from the .308 at 200 yards. With the .223 and good factory loads I can get 1/4-1/2 MOA groups at 200 yards. I have not used handloads yet - too lazy. [:)]
  
  The Accu-trigger is great. Once you have one, you will wonder why the rest of the manufacturers don't have something similar. Anyway, that is my 2 cents.

  I've found that alot of advice and information can be found at matches and meets. Especially if you own similar gear. Why don't you sit in a match and see what everyone else is using. I doubt you'll find many shooters with a magnum cartridge.
  
  But alot of them have started from scratch, and learned the hard way of what they need and didn't need. So I imagine they will have alot of readily available willing to give advice on how to start out.

  I have a 110 that started as an '06 and then was a 223 sporter bbl and now has a 223 SS, fluted HB. The original savage trigger can be easily worked down to 2.5lbs. It is in a Savage target stock with adj cheek piece. 12lbs. It will do better than I can. Today was the first day with the heavy bbl and the best 5 shot @ 80yds was 3/4". The first 4 were 3/8" but the fifth got pulled when the .45 next to me started blasting away during my squeeze [:(!]
  
  At 300 yds I would go with the 243. The best benchrest bullets are 6mm and the ammo is important at the longer ranges. The reduced recoil will be a bonus late in the match.
