Winchester 1906
First, I am new to this site and think itsgreat! Second, I am impressed by the knowledgeof most of the members.My question: my son owns a win. mod.1906 ser#171xx in .22 short only, that is in good condition,with the exception of the bore that is in poor shape. Can you tell me when it was made and approx. value? will having the barrel relined detract from its value? thanks in advance.

I have a Winchester model 1906. I tried to search the serial # and can not find anything. The web sight I found says that it is out of their database date range. The serial # is 771XXX. Does anyone have any info on this?

Not enough infomation. Value depends on which type(expert or not), condition and whether it was tampered with. 0 -

Several factors to consider, condition, both outside and bore, do the numbers match, sometimes these models will be mismatched serial numbers. The sight you mentioned, what brand and condition? Tang sight? Look at the butt plate, this model often shows excessive wear at the butt, can you easily read the markings there? How much orig, finish is on the gun, both the barrel and the frame. How nice is the wood? Bores, often are not great in these guns, but if it is nice, check to see if it has a replaced barrel. Values can vary from about $100 to up, way up. Best if you looked at some past sales here, do a search then you can begin to see the value of your gun.0 -
Check out the completed auctions by searching 1906 expert. You should find enough to identify the rifle you mention. With the pistol grip stock and the different forearm it probably is an expert. However a lot of 80-90 year old rifles have been folded, spindled and mutilated. There are just to many possible variables to make an estimate of value. A good expert with the right period peep sight could easily bring $650.00-$1,000.00. A Lyman WS-1 in good shape would bring $100.00-$150.00 by itself.
Inspect it carefully, matching serial#s, finish, reline?, sanded, original sights?, reblue? and after all that you can still buy an expensive lesson.
There weren't to many special order 1906s, but there were quite a few experts sold with 1/2 and full nickel finish. It's a desireable collectible rifle. Take care in getting it valued.
