Smith & Wesson Model 28-2
Hello, I'm new to your website, but have already found a wealth of information here. Truly a great place. Anyhow, I recently aquired a Smith & Wesson revolver stamped "MOD. 28-2" in the standard place on the frame. on the barrel it reads " 45 CAL. MODEL 1955". I have refered to all of my books trying to find out the history of this model plus a value. But, every model 28 I find shows that it comes only in .357. this pistol is in 45 ACP. It is in a presentation box w/ acc. It has a 6 1/2" barrel and adj. sights. It matches the decription of a mod. 25-2 perfectly. but it is stamped 28-2. I've had some friends tell me that someone has just changed the barrel and the cylinder, but everything looks too right to me. Plus the books that I have show the 28 as being a diffrent frame than this gun. Any help would be great.

Get out your magnifying glass and take a closer peek at the model number that's stamped on your revolver. I've seen some model number stampings on S&W's that had numbers that could easily be misread.
What Mike's telling you is correct. The Models 25 and 28 are both built on the 'N' frame. Until just recently, the N frame was the largest of S&W's frame sizes. The new S&W .500 Mag is built on an entirely new and larger frame. Blah, blah, blah.......[xx(]
The only real difference in a Model 25-2 and a 28-2 would be the cylinder and the barrel. Model 28's were made with 4" or 6" barrels that have a different contour than those on a 25-2/Model of 1955, which used the "heavy" non-tapered barrel.
Among other differences, the Model 28 had a brushed/matte blued finish rather than the high lustre polished appearance usually associated with blued S&W's of that period, including the Model 25.
If there's still any question as to whether or not the gun is factory original in its current state, you can get a letter from S&W's official historian, Roy Jinks, that will tell the exact configuration/caliber that that gun left the factory.

Here's a picture of a S&W 28-2 that was done over .It's caliber is .45 Colt .The barrel and cylinder were not changed,they were bored out.The person that sold it to me said it was done by Maga-Na-Port Custom Shop.It shoots as good as it looks.

That is a high blue not the matte finish that was on the Model 28. It is either a 28 that was refitted with a 45 cylinder and barrel and reblued or as said earlier you might be misreading the number. 0 -
SP45,if you're talking to me I'm not misreading the number 28-2. If you want I'll give the serial number and you can check it yourself as I have already done.The barrel and cylinder were bored out not replaced.I know this for a fact.The gun has also been refinished with the high gloss blue.The gun pictured is not the one that that the original topic is about.

A gun shop near me has a new 629 that is laser etched 610 classic on the side of the barrel. Also marked 610-2 behind the crane. The serial matches the box and says 629 on the box. .44 cylinder and barrel. Go figure.

I realize this is a WAY old post but I just bought a used 25-2 .45 ACP and I'm looking for the little EZ loader clips for it. Where might a guy find those?

Do you mean the "moon clips"? Brownells has them and they also have a really neat de-mooner tool, makes it a breeze to remove th spent cases from the moon clip.

I assume that is what they are called i.e. I believe you. I remember the guy I bought it from today said there was a little tool for removing the cases so I would bet that's what I need.
