1940 303 british
My grandfather just gave me a 303 british he got in WWII . It's in good condition a few problems here and there ( he had it in a closet since I can rememeber , and never saw it till now ). The serial number in front of bolt has a ENGLAND stamped over it . The ring around the stock connected to the trigger guard has MA LITHGOW S.M.L.E. III 1940 . What does the MA stand for ? It's stamped on a lot of the parts . Far as I can tell it has matching #'s . I'm looking to clean it up , and find an era bayonet for it . Any info. on it , and how much it's worth would be helpful .
PS. Grandad said the bolts on these guns sometimes blew back . Any truth to this ?

It was made in Lithgow Australia. Worth around $150.00 to $225.00 depending on condition. Should be a good shooter. Enjoy it.

The bolts aren't prone to blow back any more than any gun. There is always the infintesimal chance of failure but if in good shape, it should be fine with any commercial or surplus ammo. Oh yeah, PS- the surplus ammo is probably corrosive. If you shoot it, clean it first with soap and water, then regular bore cleaner.

the MA represents the factory in australia where it was made.

If you don't find a bayonet here, check southern ohio gun website. And good info at surplusrifle.com, but check fast- site is shutting down for good very soon. One of the slickest bolt actions ever made, good shooters. 0 -
Yea, they may be good shooters, but they're UGLY.
I'd never want to be seen in the woods with one!0
