Remington 700 factory wildcat
Acquired a Rem 700 factory chambered in 7mm-06. Anybody every fool with this cartridge? Can a 280 be fired in it without incident?

The only way to be absolutely sure of the chamber is to have a Cerrosafe casting done and then have it measured. Now, you can most certainly do this yourself as it is not hard but you must be precise when you measure the casting. Your best bet is to have a qualified gunsmith handle it for you. There have been way too many wildcats chambered to take a chance on this one being a '280'. Safety first.

Barnes book says the .280 is very similar to the 7mm/06 wildcat.Does not explain what,if any difference.May be unsafe to shoot.Better send it to ME.I WANT IT!!!!! 0 -
When Remington re-introduced the 280 in the 700 they first called it the 7mm-06. There was some confusion over the caliber and it was renamed 280 Rem.
They are the same thing. Just like the 244 and 6mm0 -

I would have to agree with BT99, it is possable that your Remington chambered 7mm-06 is in fact a .280, Remington did use that name for a very short time. The only differance between a .280 Rem and the Euro 7X64 (aka 7mm-06) is the shoulder on the .280 is set forword about .050. Yes, a chamber cast is in order, to find out what you have. 0 -

What Allen said! This would be the most definitive way to know without getting hurt.
BTW, the .280 Rem holds 2 grains more powder than the 7mm-06 indicating the the shoulder is set forward a tad, possible .050". I think you will have head space problems and it probably will not lock up.

From the 50th Anniversary Edition 'Sierra Rifle Reloading
Manual,' pg. 356-357:
"...Only when loaded in a good bolt action does the
potential of the .280 really become apparent. Remington
saw this, and offered the cartridge...in the Model
721 bolt-action, and the subsequent Model 700. In a
public relations move, the cartridge was reintroduced
as the 7mm-06 in 1979. Realizing the potential for
confusion with the already established 7mm-06 wildcat,
which has slightly different headspace dimensions, they
reintroduced the round as the 7mm Remington Express just
a few months later. This created even more chaos, as
customers confused the 7mm Express and the 7mm Magnum,
sometimes with disastrous results. Confused? So was the
gun buying public. Remington changed the title back to
its original .280 Remington a few years later."

I appreciate the update, you may have a collectable piece. Surely not too many were made with that caliber inscription. Are you going to call Remington for confirmation?

Really don't think it's necessary Boomer. It's a factory barrel and the designation is "7mm-06 Rem". Reckon it were made in '79, maybe early '80. Might just run it on the auction and see what she does.[^]
