What is a CETME and is it any good?

I apologize if this has been asked a million times but the folks at AK-47.net said I should ask here. At a recent Kansas City gun show I saw all types of CETME's. They ranged in price from $380-$700. All looked well used even though the signs said they had "all new parts" whatever that means. They look like a clone of the HK94. I was told no the HK is the clone of the Spanish CETME. Anyway, I understand it is 7.62mm but I was wondering if they are worth the money,if their accuracy is sloppy can they be tuned up, and which one's should I stay away from.

  The CETME is a Spanish rifle that HK bought the rights to and modified to make the HK-91. It is a high quality roller-locked rifle and is quite accurate. The things you'd want to check on any non-original CETME is the fit of the internals (ie. bolt to receiver clearance. Also check the headspace and make sure that the pin to hold the post-ban muzzlebrake in place isn't protruding into the bore.

  Off the top of my head here so most of it'll be right, but might have something small wrong.
  The CETME is based off the HK91 and uses the same roller locking device. What it means by "all new parts" is that a company, usually Century Arms, assembles them using thier recievers. Yes, they are 7.62 x 51 (.308 NATO).
  I too have been looking at them. I asked about them a while back and most people thought they were worth the money. I have seen them sold for as low as $300 and one user here said he got his for just over $200. I don't recall what most people thought they'd shoot, accuracy-wise, but it sounded like it'd be a decent deer gun out to 200 yards at least.

  The prices you quoted seem a little high, but then again I believe there are different furniture(s) available which would increase the price. I got mine a year ago from www.centuryarms.com through an FFL for under $300. My father bought one at a show for $280 with 500 rounds. Though neither of the finishes were great, they both shoot exceptionally well IMO versus an Ak/SKS type rifle.

  A few of my buddies have Cetme rifles and they've experienced minor problems here & there. I've tried them out and I prefer the L1A1 style,function, & design. But if you have to have one, they sell better brands of the Cetme design like the Springfield SAR-8 or the Hk 91. Be expecting to cough up a little more green$$ for the better made ones.[:p]

  Your confusion is understandable, because over the years this basic design has come full circle.The CETME was developed by former WWII German engineeers who were working for the Spanish government during the late '40's-early '50's. In the late '50's-early '60's HK took this design back to Germany, modified it slightly and developed their G3/HK91 series rifles. In the late '90's the Spanish military decided to upgrade their standard rifle and ended up adopting the HK design as their miltary issue.
