Can I use large rifle primers in place of large pistol primers?
I am shooting a Blackhawk chambered in 44 mag.

I use rifle primers in all of my auto pistol ammo. To get reliable ignition some will change the hammer spring to a stronger one. why? No failed primers in high preeure ammo. This practice was started buy some friends who were shooting 38 supers in the 50,000 psi range. Most of my auto ammo is +p or better so I figured it would be a good insurance. 454 casull and other high performance handgun ammo uses rifle primers normally. In the case of a SA revolver, it probably wouldn't hurt or be advantageous. In a DA revolver, it would be a severe hinderance because you couldn't tune the pistol as finely(read use Federal primers).

I have used small pistol primers in my "K" Hornet for many years. Has done a fine job, with no recognizable problems. Am dealing with 13.5 grains of H-4227 behind a 45 gr. Hornady HP, out of a Ruger #3. Works great for me. GW. 0 -

In addition to the physical differences between pistol and rifle primers, they're also designed to ignite different types of powders.
Pistol primers are designed to reliably ignite the slower burning pistol powders. Rifle primers, the faster burning rifle powders.
Chamber pressures can very easily be adversely affected by using the wrong primer with the wrong powder.0
