Eagle Arms AR15 Problems?

[B)]OK AR experts, here's a stumper for you.

I purchased a pre ban AR 15 from a coworker about a year ago. The gun is in excellent looking condition, and it has a stainless match barrel. The original owner claims he only ran about 50 rounds through it before he became a Springfield nut and had to sell the AR to me to get him one. My problem is that I've tried just about everything to eliminate a feeding problem and nothing has worked. I've had the gun to two different gunsmiths, replaced clips, clip springs, the buffer spring, the firing pin, many internals, cleaned the hell out of it after every firing, and tried several different high grade ammos, and she still misfires (I can take it apart and put it together now like Forrest Gump!). After a good clening. it will usually fire the first 10 rounds w/o a problem, then it's JAM city after that. Getting a bit frusterated and embaressed as my sport shooting buddie sits and has a blast with his dirty uncleaned $300.00 Romanian AK 47 and I sit with my high dollar AR and try to figure out what's wrong with it all day.

Any suggestions to find a cure for my sick AR would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all![:D]

    Have you replaced the follower in the magazines? They make a new follower that replaces the older model - I think the new ones are green. They are to keep the rounds from going bullet point high and a failure to feed.

    Thanks for your reply and your willingness to assist!

    I have replaced all of the followers with the new green ones. It did not seem to make a difference.

    What seems to be happening when the gun jams is the spur on the end of the bolt comes back forward after firing, misses picking up the butt of the next round to be chambered, then the bolt/spur comes to a rest with the action half way open against the round leaving a scribe or scratch mark on the side of the round. Sometimes the action completely closes missing the entire round, failing to chamber the next round at all.

    I was thinking of trying to replace the spur on the end of the bolt or just anti up and get an entire new bolt assembly.

    algore is wrong. This rifle is not a low-end ArmaLite marketed under the Eagle brand. (Even if it were, ArmaLite does not change the function specifications for the less expenseive current Eagle brand; it merely does not finish them as well and supplies them with fewer accessories.) It is a Pre-Ban Eagle brand rifle apparently made before Eagle acquired the ArmaLite name. It is NOT an AR-15. It is most likely an M15. AR-15 is a Colt trademarked name, and is not used on other brands. The Eagle M15 uses magazines, not clips.

    From the description provided, I suspect the magazine latch may be defective or located too low so as not to hold the magazines high enough to have the top cartridge stripped by the returning bolt. If the latch is defective, it can be replaced. If the receiver was machined incorrectly in the first place, I would try to modify the magazine latch to hold the magazines higher. I would also look at the bolt to see if the lugs are out of spec someway so as not to project down the normal amount and thereby miss stripping the top cartridge in the magazine. Sometimes people have swapped bolts and bolt carriers on this style of rifles and some junk gets into otherwise nice rifles.

    To summarize, I would look first at the magazine latch, then the bolt. I suspect the bolt. To test my theory on the magazine being held too low or the bolt lugs being too short, try putting up pressure on the magazines as the rifle is fired. The slight bit of up-and-down play may allow the magazine to be lifted enough to prove that is the cause of the problems. If that works, then it will have to be determined what is causing the problem, either the position of the magazine, or the bolt lugs, or both.

    Let us know what solves the problem.

    I would try single loading it and seeing if the gun would eject the cartridges AFTER you have it warmed up with 10 rounds. Then look into the mag pickup as Judge Colt says. Metal is expanding after the gun is warm and causing it to go out of spec. or you have low powered ammo that isn't ejecting. I would look at all clips and see if they are the same spec. El cheapo mags do not work well in some guns.

    Thanks for your input. I'll inspect the magazine latch, and also test your theory of pushing up on the bottom of the magazine while firing. If that does not work I'll inspect the bolt further. In the event that I need to replace someting in the bolt assembly, do you reccomend that I replace individual parts or just go with an entire new bolt assembly? If indeed you believe that I should replace the entire bolt assembly what product and provider do you reccomend to assure that I get quality products?

    I suspect your information about the rifle being an M15 is spot on. Upon reviewing the Armalite site I did see models similar to mine called the M15. Thanks for the correction, and thanks again for your input.

    I suspect a failure of the bolt/carrier assy to fully recoil far enough to pick up another round. You can test this by just firing one round to see if the slide stop feature works.
    Since it functions just after it's cleaned it sounds like you have a marginal gas supply which wont tolerate a slightly dirty rifle.
    Buy a new gas seal ring that mounts on the bolt and give it a try.
    I bought a lightweight barrel that was only test fired. After removing the pinned flash hider I found it was coked up with a ton of carbon.
    That's why I recommend replacing the piston ring as a first measure.
    If you're still unhappy, the gas port size needs to be enlarged to the next size number drill. Try this question on AR15.com and let us know your results.

    I have a Eagle EA-15 from early 90's vintage, I've had a different problem in that after heating up with the bolt open (after firing) it would not have enough power to remove the next round from the mag (binding), changing the receiver extension tube fixed that (changing just the spring did not). After that a new problem appeared, it would drop the spent round in the chamber then send a new round in and jam the two together(changing extractor didn't work), next I replaced the receiver extension tube again and buffer this time with a Colt manufacture ones, so far the problem has not reoccurred.

    Maybe your bolt isn't going far enough back to remove the next round?

    But first make sure you have a "good" magazine, the 20rd colts are probably the best for feeding. If you can't get one try a new post ban 10rd from colt.

    If you are sure you have a good mag and the other fixes listed by others above don't work take a look at both receiver extension tube and buffer. Note the buffer should have three angle cuts around the face (where the bolt touches), my original eagle only had one, I assume this has something to do with windage for proper cycling.

    I not a gun smith, just relating my experiences.

    What brand of mags do you have now.
