Can you shoot steal shot out of improved cyclinder
I have a shotgun that has interchangable chokes, As far as I know they are all designed for lead shot, but if the chock is wide enough can you shoot steel shot?? Thanks.

steal shot should be shot thru steal shot chokes. granted, its open enough, but why chance ruining a good choke? just buy a steal shot choke tube. its cheap enough. if your gun bbl is old, odds are it isnt chrome lined either. scratch city baby. be more concerned about the bbl!

SG, if the firearm is safe for steel shot as bobski noted, you can use whatever sort of choke is best for your purpose. Like JustC, I use an Imp.Cyl. choke in my duck gun because the steel shot shoots such a tight pattern compared to lead while - all the aplogists for the junk aside - the lethal range of the crap is so much less than that of lead that even on close shots, I rarely see a pellet penetrate the body . . . so I put out a wide, dense pattern at close range and pray for a neck / head hit or broken wing. I crippled more ducks inside of 35 yards the first day I used steel than I'd lost of all species in the previous twenty years. Utterly disgusted with the junk. 0 -
I extend what Icon was saying, the price of steel versus tungsten or bizmuth isn't really worth the extra wear & tear to your gun, not to mention more wounded birds. Anymore it's just not worth it!

Using IC and at the tightest, Mod, is recommended for steel shot. The plastic wad protects the majority of the barrel. The concern is in the choke and it's constriction of the shot. Using an IC choke will lessen the constriction and provide a pattern simular to that of Mod w/lead shot. With steel shot, you actually become a better "hunter" because it makes you work the birds closer and have a better decoy spread design. It is frusturating to hit birds and cripple them or hit geese and hear the steel shot bounce off, but if you exercise patinents, the birds will come in to steel shot range. Also, whatever size lead shot you user, use two sizes larger in steel...4 lead=2steel, 6lead=4steel. I have found #3 steel in 3"mag to be a good all around size for ducks. 0 -
raskil, I have no doubt this works for you. I should have qualified my remarks by noting that I live far out of the main flyways so the most productive way (actually the only productive way) for me to hunt is to hop in the canoe and jump shoot 'em. I pass up more shots than I take - exactly the opposite of my "pre-steel" days and will not shoot at a range of more than 30 yards. My first steel shot duck (& cripple!) was hit hard at about 50 feet just as he touched down - bowled him over and knocked him a good ten feet across the river . . . feathers and down everywhere . . . if it had been lead, I would not have shot - don't care for duckburger. Picked up my paddle to retrieve him . . . & away he flew. 0 -
The 5 choke sets that came with my Benelli super 90 and Super Blk Eagle say right on them that "steel" shot is ok in the Mod and larger chokes.
It is not OK in the Imp Mod and Full chokes.0 -
Use shot as specified on the choke tube you have. If yours is marked for "lead only" do not use steel, purchase one in the constriction desired and designated for steel use. Brownells, Cabela's, Graf & Son's should all have a choke for your application. 0
