Age of Savage 311A - "R"
I have a Stevens/ Savage 311a in .410. The letters FC and the letters A and J individually circled appear on the under lug of the barrel, on the forearm and again on the receiver. If anyone can cipher the date of manufacture from this I would appreciate it.
The circled date code letter is "R"
Other markings that are probably irrelevant include the letter R on forearm barrel lug; the left side of the receiver is marked Stevens 311A, Savage Arms Corporation, Westfield Mass USA; the right side is marked Model 311A in very small letters; what appears to be a 7R appears in an oval in the top of the left barrel.In another thread someone expressed the opinion that such guns are bringing $500 or more? I'm sure I didn't give more than $275 for mine and I'm thinking more like $250.

Made from 1982 to date...You can ask any price You want....but You might end up owning this gun for life...Realistically I believe You're Correct in your asessment of the Value...

Given that there is no serial number anywhere on the gun I assumed it was older than that ? ? ?

I bought a nice, better than average 12 gauge a couple years ago for about $250. The .410 would bring anywhere from $25 to $100 more around here, depending on the day and the mood. Still nice shooter, but my guess is that your gun would be from the 50's or early 60's. 0 -

On the main barrel lug there is a very very small "?P" in an oval, the ? might be an S , C or 5 - next to that is a lightly stamped Z. Henry-On the bottom of the receiver,between the trigger guard and the hinge pin,there should be a number and letter in a small circle.It is sometimes quite faint,and difficult to read.I need the letter.the number has no significance. 0 -
