Any information about this caliber would be appreciated. It is stamped on the bartrel of a rifle I just bought. Ackley Improved maybe?

  According to my reference Remington changed the name of the "244 Remington" to the "6mm Remington" in 1963. Your basic rifle PROBABLY was made before this. The "Improved Cartridge" makes minor dimensional changes ( Neck Length, Shoulder Angle & Body Taper etc ). Your still able to fire the basic cartridge ( In your case 244 rem. safely ).
  Do your self a favor, take it to a COMPETENT gunsmith, have him do a chamber cast, inspect and test fire the rifle, for your peace of mind and safety.
  There's no telling what kind of brain dead, shade tree mechanic might have rechambered your rifle at this late date, and what kind of job he did!

  The 244 Remington had a 1/12 twist rate, would stabilize light bullets and was a super varmint rifle! The 6mmRemington is the exact same case but the 6mm's had 9.5 twist to stabilize heavier bullets and be varmint to deer guns. But by the time Remington made the change the 243Winchester had gotten a big share of the business for that bullet diameter! You may have a 244AI! Slow twist? GHD

  I think the other guys hit the nail on the head.
  I almost bought a 6mm AI but I don't reload yet so it wouldn't have been real practical.

  Thank you all for the information. It's probably going to be allot of work, but I got the rifle cheap and it's in great condition and hopefully will be a great shooter. Thanks again.
